EMU offers several options for Teaching English as a Second Language

  1. TESOL Graduate Certificate (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
  2. Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) for MA in Education degree
  3. Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) for MA in Education degree and initial teaching license with K-12 ESL endorsement

This component contains a common core of courses that address language/literacy competence with diverse populations, intervention strategies for diverse learners, and developing leadership skills in teaming, collaboration, and consultation with parents, school and community social agencies. All options equip candidates to provide culturally and linguistically responsive instruction for English learners and successfully complete the ESL Praxis assessment (#5362).

In Virginia, initial teaching licensure is available in TESL with additional course work, a supervised practicum, and an internship. Candidates who hold a valid Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate and successfully complete the graduate certificate courses through EMU at Lancaster are eligible to be recommended for the PDE ESL certification.
