This fully-online graduate certificate is designed to educate and support nurses and other allied healthcare professionals and staff who are increasingly confronted by trauma's impact on routine patient or client care. Advanced education in trauma and resilience will give staff the ability to recognize a traumatized patient or client and develop a care plan that matches the specific needs of the client.

Graduate Certificate: Trauma and Resilience in Healthcare Settings (15 credits)

To qualify for the graduate certificate in Trauma and Resilience in Healthcare Settings, candidates must complete fifteen required credit hours. Courses in this program can be taken in any order or as a stand-alone. In addition, coursework from the TRHS Certificate can be used toward an MSN in Leadership for Trauma Awareness & Resilience.

Trauma, Restoration, and Resilience in Healthcare
The Neurobiology of Trauma, Resilience, and Well-Being

Note: Each course lasts 7-8 weeks and is three credits

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Trauma, Restoration and Resilience in Healthcare

This course will introduce the core concepts of adverse experiences, toxic stress, trauma, restoration, self-care, and resilience in the healthcare setting and provide a research-based, strength-based approach to creating a trauma-informed, resilience-fostering healthcare setting. Prerequisite: Bachelor’s Degree.
The Neurobiology of Trauma, Resilience, and Well-Being

This course will provide a foundational understanding of the neurobiology of the human stress response. Exploration of neuroscience as it applies to psychosocial stress, resilience, and the cultivation of well-being. Various heuristics of the brain and central nervous system will be presented. The course will present the frame of Interpersonal Neurobiology as an integrative method of applying neurobiological principles in the field.
Self-care and Resilience for Healthcare Providers

This course provides information and strategies for the development of self-care practices to address burnout, compassion fatigue, and promote resiliency. Strategies to serve students, meet professional goals, and maintain health and well-being will be developed.
Trauma-Informed Strategies for Healthcare Providers

This course will provide strategies to intervene in trauma-informed and restorative way for healthcare providers, co-workers, and clients. Organizational environments that offer healing and restoration will be explored.
Research in Risk and Resilience

This course will examine current research-based evidence on trauma, risk, resiliency, and protective factors. Course material will be drawn from research focusing on both healthcare providers and potential clients. Course participants will review the literature addressing the needs of multiple populations and strategies to build resiliency in healthcare providers, co-workers, and clients.

Applicants are accepted to the program on a rolling basis, with preference given to applicants who will study full time. The admissions committee will review complete applications. Applicants will be notified as committee decisions are made.

Courses are offered online
Bachelor’s degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution.
Minimum 3.0 GPA for application. Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 will be considered on an individual basis and may be required to demonstrate academic ability prior to enrolling in the program.
