Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible to transfer to EMU?
- To be eligible to apply for transfer admission, a student must have completed at least 15 credit hours post high school graduation and at least two semesters completed at another College/University.
- We expect you to be in good standing with your previous school with at least a 2.0 GPA when you transfer. Your GPA will start over at EMU.
How many of my credits will transfer?
- We accept up to 65 transferable credits. A minimum of 55 credits must be taken at EMU (However, depending on your major of choice, you may end up graduating with more credits in order to satisfy curriculum requirements).
What credits will transfer?
Undergraduate transfer credit is permitted from an accredited institution for those courses with a grade of “C” or better and similar in content and scope to courses offered at EMU.

Pass/Fail grades do not transfer.

Courses that do not match an EMU course may be eligible to transfer as elective credit. However, do not assume “elective” credits can count towards the “electives” required in your major.

Non-Transferable courses:
- Remedial courses (usually numbered 1-99)
- College orientation/Student Success Courses
- Courses with “Pass/Fail” grades or “satisfactory” grades
- Continuing Education Credits (CEU)
- Professional development courses, Special Topics, Seminars, or Internships
Transferable Courses under Special Conditions:
- Capstone courses transfer as elective credit only
- Internships and practicum courses transfer as elective only
What are the deadlines to apply for the Fall/Spring semester?

EMU has a rolling admissions process, meaning you can apply at any time. After submitting all required application materials, you can expect to receive an admission decision within two weeks.
I’ve attended 3 different colleges. How will this affect my GPA?

EMU calculates your cumulative GPA based off credits earned and quality points. Once enrolled at EMU, your GPA starts over.

What is the housing policy for Transfer students?
EMU believes that residence hall living fosters social and emotional development, so it is required that full-time single students live on campus unless they meet one of the following criteria:
- are 21 years of age prior to September 1 of the semester enrolling and have earned a total of 90 semester hours
- are living with parents, spouse or legal guardians, written permission from these persons is required
- need to reserve an apartment due to marriage plans within a semester
- require specialized care prescribed by a medical doctor
What is the Intercultural Study Requirement?

EMU is one of the only universities that requires all students to do some form of intercultural study. This shapes our campus, our classrooms, and our lifestyles. Transfer students must complete at least nine (9) semester hours of intercultural designates. While students may transfer up to six (6) credits towards the intercultural requirement, three (3) credits are required to be completed at EMU.
