Internships: practice your passionstudent at internship

A central component of a term with the EMU Washington Semester is a professional internship experience in your chosen field. Faculty and staff work with students before they arrive to secure an internship in their field of study. This process is student-centered and collaborative.

How do I get an internship?

  • Check out the internship directory below to get an idea about the types of internship opportunities in your area of interest.
  • Washington Semester faculty and staff will help you to find an internship in your major or area of interest. We especially look for internships in culturally diverse settings, with organizations who are making a positive contribution to the community. The placement process usually begins 3-4 months before the start of the term.
  • We generally make the initial contact at an organization. We will work with you to schedule a phone or video interview with the organization. Ahead of the phone interview, look at these tips and prepare yourself for this important conversation.
  • Some internships have their own application process, which may require an in person interview, an application, or a cover letter. Others do not have formal internship program and will not require anything beyond interviewing you. In either case, we ask you to prepare a resume tailored for the internships you are pursuing.
