Music at EMU

Music Education

EMU’s program in music with all-grade (PreK-12) education licensure prepares students to be both well-prepared musicians — teaching instrumental music, vocal/choral music, or both — and outstanding educators. This endorsement allows you to become licensed to teach in all grades, PreK-12.

Students in this program take all the requirements needed for the regular music major, and also take classes in education.

Music education majors begin in-school practicum experiences during the fifth week of the first year on campus and continue practicum experiences systematically throughout their program until student teaching, a full semester during senior year, in a nearby school. Music education majors meet with both a music advisor and an education advisor to plan courses each semester and ensure that all program requirements are being met.

All-Grade Education (Grades PreK-12)

Earning your PreK-12 education license to teach involves a double major in education and your content area: Health & Physical EducationMusicSpanishTheater Arts, or Visual Arts. A minor in TESL can also lead to a teaching license.

It also includes one semester of student teaching and many other practicum experiences in schools. And because EMU’s program is approved by NCATE, the national accrediting association, your teaching license for grades PreK-12 will be accepted in most U.S. states.

About Teacher Education at EMU

Highest Accreditation Standards in the Nation

Our teacher education program has carried the highest national accreditation standards in the nation for more than 40 years: National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). EMU is one of only five private colleges in Virginia to be NCATE-accredited!

Here we prepare future teachers who teach boldly in a changing world through an ethic of care and critical reflection. For them, teaching is a calling, an act of service to the world.

Two key characteristics of our teacher education program are: sending future teachers into classrooms early, and reflective practice, which is woven into all education courses at EMU.
