English as a Second Language (ESL) Certification

Overview

EMU’s English as a Second Language certification program is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and meets PDE’s newly revised content guidelines. This 16 credit hour program prepares teachers to work effectively in Pennsylvania public K-12 schools with English Language Learners (ELLs). Course sequence is divided into initiatory, mid-level and culminating courses. Candidates are advised to take courses in that order. Successful applicants should be committed to improving educational opportunities for English Language Learners. Candidates who hold a valid Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate and successfully complete all ESL certification courses will be recommended to the Pennsylvania Department of Education for certification.

EDSL 551 Methods of Teaching ESL/FL (3)
EDSL 541 Foundations of English as a Second Language (3)

Mid-Level:
EDSL 571 Language Acquisition & Grammar (3)
EDSL 581 Language and Culture (3)

Culminating:
EDSL 591 ESL Assessment & Support (3)
EDSL 611 Professional Development Portfolio (1)

Earn a Master of Arts in Education degree with a concentration in ESL

Admission Requirements

Admission to the MA in Ed program is required for ESL certification.
