A cohort is a group of 12-25 students who progress through a series of courses as a unit. At EMU, emphasis is placed on learning in community by utilizing the cohort model, allowing students to form close relationships with their peers.

As referenced above, most students need to satisfy several EMU Core (General Education) requirements in addition to the cohort classes. While some students prefer to complete these courses prior to beginning with a cohort, others prefer to take them alongside the cohort classes. Your academic advisor will help you to develop an academic plan that works best for you.

Students in an online course need to be technologically proficient, self-determined, and efficient at time management. There is a tradeoff between being able to decide when you schedule your coursework and being in a physical classroom weekly for a set block of time. Where a student would traditionally be in a classroom for 3-4 hours a week (plus 12-15 hours of homework/study), they are now doing the same amount of individual or group class work at times set by the student, which are determined by the weekly deadlines of the course.

Yes! We recognize that some students have been out of school for many years, and that our students are balancing school with work and family responsibilities. The personal, individualized attention from faculty and staff eliminates obstacles standing in the way of student success.

Access to a computer is required for the program. We strongly encourage students to obtain a laptop or tablet for use during class and for assignments. Please see our technology requirements and competencies for more details.

Applications are accepted throughout the year until the cohorts are filled. To ensure your preferred cohort placement and to get a jump start on any core courses you might need, it is suggested to apply by July 1 for fall enrollment and by November 1 for spring enrollment.
