Student Employment

Finding student employment

EMU offers a variety of on and off campus employment opportunities to students with demonstrated financial need as determined by the results of the FAFSA.

For new students, the application process begins when the student receives a Financial Aid Notification Letter that indicates he or she is eligible for student employment. Students are invited to contact departments that have student employment positions. All Students whether employed on campus in previous years or new to campus employment are required to apply directly through the job postings. Departmental supervisors select student employees based on personal contacts and interviews.

Application Process

  1. Visit the student employment site. You can review the listings for a position that fits your skills and interests. When you identify a position of interest, fill out the application in full to include all application questions by clicking the “Apply” link on the description page. The supervisor of this position will review your application and respond to candidates they choose to interview.
  2.  Once the Financial Aid Office confirms your work study award, Human Resources will extend an offer through the HR system. You will need to review and sign the offer letter to accept your position before beginning employment.
  3. Human Resources will send onboarding links to all new student employees through the HR system. A federal I9 form needs to be completed by all new student employees or those for whom their previous I9 has expired. Federal and State tax withholding forms are also required for new student employees.
  4. Once all signed paperwork and work work authorization documents have  been received and approved through E-Verify, Human Resources will activate an online time card for the student.

A federal W-4, state VA-4, and Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9) form must be completed for each new student employee. Proper identification is required for completion of the I-9 form. The most common forms of identification are a U.S. passport or a state driver’s license and social security card. The Human Resources Office is required by law to view the original documents for the I-9 form.

Time Cards and Payment

The HR system utilizes online time cards and payroll is processed and paid every two weeks. Students can elect to have their paychecks sent directly to their bank account by filling out our Direct Deposit Form or use the Visa Debit paycard option offered in the HR system during Onboarding as a secondary option for payment.
