Holistic Advising
You will have multiple members on your success team at EMU. Your academic advisor(s) will be faculty or staff who will support your academic success at EMU and help you enroll in the appropriate courses each term. While YOU are responsible for your educational goals and degree requirements, an academic advisor collaborates with you to refine and achieve your goals.
What You Do (Student):
- Check your emu.edu email for advisor communications, placement assessments, appointment requests, and reminders
- Unless you’ve earned writing credit, you will be sent a writing self-assessment/questionnaire. Don't worry: This questionnaire is not a test that you can pass or fail -- it is a tool to help you assess your writing needs.
- Send transcripts and official AP scores: Tell your advisor of any courses you may be enrolled in this summer. Until transcripts arrive, advisors will use projected credits earned to create a schedule.
- Advanced Placement (AP) scores are awarded by academic course, so review (HERE) the equivalency of an AP score for college credit at EMU
- Dual-Enrolled (DE) credit requires a transcript from the college, not the high school. Credit is only awarded for grades of “C” or above.
- Show up prepared with questions or ideas about your academic plans
- Students can review the curriculum outlines and 4-year plans for anticipated majors on myEMU/Academics website. (Link)
- Ask for help early—don’t wait until a problem becomes overwhelming
What Your Advisor Can Help With:
- Choosing the right courses
- Exploring or changing majors and minors
- Understanding degree requirements
- Setting goals and discussing career plans
- Connecting with campus resources (tutoring, counseling, career services, CoachLink, and more)
- Preparing for internships, intercultural requirements, and graduation
