Purpose and Description of Program

This monthly online seminar for the Study of Bowen Theory and its applications is designed for ministering persons with a range of knowledge and practice with the theory. Those who are motivated to engage Bowen Theory as a resource for addressing the problems in families, congregations and workplaces are invited to participate. The curriculum will focus on theoretical concepts and the ways they are learned through study of one’s own family and through application to the full range of ministry practice especially as it relates to pastoral care and leadership.

Each month will include:

  • an on-line monthly two-hour faculty presentation with discussion based upon assigned readings and DVD viewings
  • reading assignments from Murray Bowen’s original work and other selected authors
  • online access to teaching videos by Dr. Bowen, Bowen Center faculty and others with expertise
  • individual monthly coaching/consultation in person or via Zoom videoconferencing

Progress happens best when reading, discussion and consultation are alternated with personal efforts to integrate family systems thinking into one’s own functioning. Participants schedule individual monthly sessions via Zoom with program faculty where they can discuss their questions about theory, their own family and the process of working on differentiation of self.

Seminar Goals:

  • To deepen one’s understanding of the Eight Concepts of Bowen Theory and their implications for understanding oneself, one’s family and one’s organization.
  • Increased ability to identify common symptoms of anxiety in self, families and communities.
  • Increased capacity to remain effectively engaged when tension rises
  • To develop greater clarity regarding beliefs, personal mission and life goals.
  • To function more consistently in accord with one’s professed principles, beliefs, goals and callings in each arena of life---personal and professional.
