Clinical Pastoral Education at EMS

We equip men and women to reflect God’s wisdom and grace in ministry. We invite students to learn through supervised practice, guided reflection, and the challenge and support of a community of learners. We call each student to develop competency in self-awareness, interpersonal awareness, conceptual ability, pastoral functioning, and ministry development and management.

Strategic Plan

In collaboration with institutions and congregations we will offer units of CPE, conduct research in pastoral care and education, offer workshops and seminars, and offer units of Supervisory CPE.
Leadership and Faculty

Penny Driediger, ACPE Certified Educator, Director

Penny holds a B.A. in Social Work from Eastern Mennonite University and an M. Div. from Eastern Mennonite Seminary with a concentration in Pastoral Care. She is ordained for ministry with Virginia Mennonite Conference and received her professional certification as a Certified Educator through the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education in 2016. Penny currently divides her time between Eastern Mennonite Seminary and Sentara RMH where she is a Staff Chaplain. At EMS Penny is the Director of Clinical Pastoral Education and Mentored Ministry.

Kenton T. Derstine, ACPE Certified Educator

Kenton came to EMS after serving for seven years as CPE Supervisor and CPE Program Manager at St. Vincent Hospitals, Indianapolis. Following graduating seminary Kenton entered Clinical Pastoral Education and served Chaplain Internships and Residencies in three different hospitals, eventually gaining certification as an ACPE Certified Educator. Included in his experience was his service as chaplain on the Critical Care units of Methodist Hospital of Indiana, home of the treatment team for drivers injured on the IndyCar racing circuit.

The Care of Student Records and Privacy Policy

Students own information about them and must know what information is being collected
and how it is being used. EMS intends to ensure that the Clinical Pastoral Education
program maintains student records in a manner consistent with federal laws and the
Standards of ACPE and that students are aware of these policies and procedures.
Furthermore, the CPE center intends to maintain a plan for appropriate confidentiality,
access, content and custody of student records in the event that the center loses its ACPE
Educator and/or accreditation.
