Spain: May 10 – June 21, 2017
On this cross-cultural, we will explore Andalucía, a majestic region in Southern Spain with historical and cultural ties to the Romans and Moors as well as Christian, Muslim, and Jewish faiths. Through homestays, lectures, and travel we will have the opportunity to immerse ourselves into this historically contested space. We will explore the rich history of Andalucía, take part in cultural interactions and witness how traditional ways of life still endure against the backdrop of globalization. Each student will be asked to think critically about issues of immigration, religion, poverty, and environment as well as the effects of a region’s history on the formation of regional and national identity. Our language study will help make us part of the culture we seek to understand. We will be challenged to examine our own core values, and cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds through close interaction with the culture, language, and history of Spain.
We begin our time in Cádiz, a beautiful coastal town, where we will take language classes while staying with welcoming host families. Cádiz, claimed by locals to be the oldest city in southwestern Europe, is known for its winding narrow roadways, fabulous beaches, bustling markets, and large open plazas. The second part of our journey includes travel to the diverse areas of Andalucía including visits to the internationally renowned Mezquita in Córdoba, the Cathedral of Saint Mary in Seville, and the Alhambra of Granada. We will go on a trek in the Sierra Nevada to reflect on our personal growth as well as the experiences of minority populations in Spain. Students should bring a keen sense of adventure and curiosity as we explore the land of sunshine, bullfighting, tapas, and flamenco.
