Indonesia 2021

Due to pandemic restrictions, travel plans for all future seminars are subject to change. With a commitment to the health and safety of students and faculty, and to the communities that host our groups, we continue to monitor conditions and restrictions for travel. Indonesia is the fourth most populated nation on earth, made up of 17,000 islands, spanning over 3,000 miles, with over 300 languages spoken. The world’s most populous Muslim country, the Indonesian government recognizes six official religions, one of which is Christianity.  This cross-cultural experience will start by familiarizing students with the dynamics of rural poverty and underdevelopment, which have led to the mass migration of millions of Indonesians to the cities, especially the megacity of Jakarta.  Students will also study the immense challenges of urbanization, especially for impoverished urban slum dwellers.

Mennonite World Conference Assembly, in Semarang, Java, offers students the chance to worship with Christians from around the world, experiencing different styles of music, art, worship, theology and friendships. Students will develop an understanding of the joys and challenges of international peers through the pre-assembly Global Youth Summit.

Students will study Indonesian Islamic history as well as the development of Christianity in Indonesia, and begin to appreciate the religious pluralism maintained by the secular Muslim government at all levels in Indonesia.

  • Tanjung Puting National Park (site of wild orangutans) on the island of Borneo.
  • Homestays with urban Muslim families and in rural Indonesian Mennonite village homes.
  • Snorkeling in beautiful but endangered coastal coral reefs.
