Lithuania 2021

Lithuania: May – June, 2021

Due to pandemic restrictions, travel plans for all future seminars are subject to change. With a commitment to the health and safety of students and faculty, and to the communities that host our groups, we continue to monitor conditions and restrictions for travel. Please check for updates on programs of interest as you make decisions for upcoming terms.

Lithuania is a culture where ancient religion and modern ideology is being challenged by Western consumer culture.  North America is a secular, highly religious (often civil), pluralistic, producer of popular culture products exported on the global scale, while Lithuania is just 20 years beyond the Soviet Occupation.  In this seminar, students from EMU will join students at the LCC International University (in Klaipeda) to experience, observe, and learn from and with each other.  Living and traveling with students, from Lithuania and other Eastern European countries is an amazing way to enter into the nexus of this rooted and changing culture. A special inquiry will explore the role of religion in the context of global change.

Students will use photography (no photography experience needed) as a way to immerse themselves in the culture, exploring old cities and Holocaust sites, cultural festivals and wind swept beaches, and finally something they discover that personally fascinates them. The experience will be capped by doing a photographic essay and creating a collaborative book of photographs.
