FAQs for Fall 2020

Below is a list of questions we're working on for Fall 2020. The health and safety of our students, faculty and staff is our top priority. Not every question below has an answer, but we hope to provide as much information as possible in as timely a way as possible. Continue to check this page for updates. It is the location with the most comprehensive information regarding fall plans.

A few important notes:

  • EMU plans to open in the fall for on-campus instruction. See below for various details related to student, faculty and staff safety.
  • The Harrisonburg campus is closed to non-essential visitors. To support health and safety, EMU is requiring invited guests to register. Register here.
  • The Lancaster site is closed.
  • Beginning June 11, the Virginia undergraduate admissions office will offer individual visits by appointment only to prospective students during regular office hours. For more details, please see www.emu.edu/visit.

The recommended COVID-19 adaptations for EMU infrastructure identified below rest upon the foundations of guidance from the American College Health Association (ACHA) and more recently released guidance for institutions of higher education by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Our fundamental goal is to operate within these guidelines to the greatest extent possible given our context.




Health and Safety

Residential Life



The plan for re-opening EMU’s instructional site in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is being developed separately in alignment with Pennsylvania guidelines. Preliminary details were sent via email on 6/4/20 from Associate Provost Mary Jensen.

  • Faculty and staff at EMU at Lancaster will continue to telework through the summer
  • All summer courses will remain online
  • Aviation flight training at ATS will resume June 8 following the aviation-specific health and safety plan
  • Resumption of in-person instruction at the Charter Lane site is anticipated at the start of fall semester.


WCSC is developing their own protocols for opening and will provide information for those students registered to be in the WCSC program this fall.
