Admissions FAQs for Fall 2020

Below are FAQs specific to the admissions process for Fall 2020. For a full list of all FAQs related to fall enrollment for 2020 at EMU see emu.edu/coronavirus/faq.

A few important notes:

The Virginia governor’s statewide stay-at-home order is in effect through June 10, 2020. Beginning June 11, 2020, the admissions office is open to daily visitors by appointment only.
EMU plans to open in the fall as usual. However, we will be ready to adopt any one of several learning environments— a decision dependent on the status of COVID-19 in the region and recommendations of health and educational authorities. The health and wellbeing of our students and our community is a top priority at EMU. Exemplary teaching and building community is a hallmark of EMU and the pandemic will not diminish these special deliverables.
Planning for fall semester and beyond has been in process for several weeks. Five teams of administrators, faculty and staff are processing logistics and concerns related to Community and Student Life, Teaching and Learning, Enrollment, Faculty and Staff, and Infrastructure.
The Harrisonburg campus and Lancaster site are closed to non-essential visitors.

Does EMU have a deposit deadline? Is it extended due to the COVID-19 outbreak?

EMU has a rolling admissions process and does not have a deadline for students to make a college decision.

Is EMU’s campus open for a tour before I make a decision?
There are many ways to visit EMU that are designed to account for a wide variety of scenarios and meet prospective students/families where they are at. For more details, please see www.emu.edu/visit. In addition to an in-person visit, we invite you to explore alternative visit opportunities:

The SAT/ACT I signed up for was canceled and I do not have a previous score. Will EMU accept my application?

Yes, EMU waived its test score requirement for fall 2020 admission and is making this a permanent change for subsequent enrollment semesters (including spring 2022 and fall 2022). EMU will continue to thoroughly review a student’s application, transcript(s), and any additional supporting application materials to make an admission decision. If more information is needed, your admissions counselor will reach out to you and let you know about the additional steps. Students may still submit SAT/ACT scores for consideration in the application review process through the test source or by emailing a PDF copy of your score report to admiss@emu.edu or your admissions counselor.

I am having issues getting my transcript sent. Can I submit an unofficial transcript to EMU for my application?

Yes, you may submit an unofficial transcript for initial admission review to admiss@emu.edu or your admissions counselor. Students are required to submit official transcripts prior to starting classes as an EMU student.

Will pass/no pass courses satisfy any requirement EMU has for admissions?

Yes, courses that are pass/no pass will be accepted by the school for admission review. Confirmation of graduation is required prior to starting classes as an EMU student.

Will my pass/fail courses from community college/dual enrollment classes be accepted?

Yes, they will be accepted as long as the “pass” equals a C or higher. If you have any questions, please contact your admissions counselor for more information.

I have been admitted to EMU and received a financial aid notification. However my financial situation has changed because of COVID-19, is there any additional help?

Please contact your admissions counselor or the financial assistance office to talk about options available to your specific situation.

How is class registration and summer orientation taking place?

Orientation and class registration are available both virtually and on campus. Please find more information and select a registration option at www.emu.edu/soar.

I am considering taking a gap semester or gap year. What is EMU’s policy for deferring admission?

Students have the option to defer their admission to the following spring or fall semester. Please contact your admissions counselor or the financial assistance office to discuss any possible implications for making an informed decision. In some instances, certain grants or scholarships might be specific to a particular term.
