Central Europe – Fall 2016
Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary
This cross-cultural semester will explore the role that dissident artists played in resisting oppressive regimes such as Nazism in Vienna and Communist dictatorships in Prague and Budapest. It will also explore the role that art is now playing in bridging Europe’s East-West divide and integrating minority groups such as Turkish people. Travel within three countries located at the cross-roads of Europe will reveal their interconnected pasts as students also become acutely aware of the oppression faced in these lands by minority groups and people of dissenting opinions. Students will find their American conceptions of the romanticized European city complicated, even as they learn to appreciate nuances in the cultures of three contemporary European metropolises.
