POSITION: Professor Emeritus/English
DEPARTMENT: Emeriti
His EMU career was preceded—and interrupted—by teaching and writing stints in Somalia, Tanzania and Zambia. Eby published five books and numerous articles and short stories. Some of them honored his conservative Mennonite past in Maryland. Generations of EMU students learned to love literature and language in Eby’s courses. He was noted for his realism, sometimes uncomfortable honesty, delightful irreverence and sincere caring for others.
Eby continued to write after retirement. In 2012 he and four other Mennonite writers and teachers were honored for their lifetime of work during the Mennonite/s Writing VI Conference.
Memorial gifts in honor of Professor Emeritus Omar Eby may be made to Eastern Mennonite University, Language and Literature Department, 1200 Park Road, Harrisonburg, VA, 22802 or online at https://emu.edu/giving/.
