Hongtao received her MBBS from Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 1990. She worked as a resident doctor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the First Hospital of Wuhan for four years. In 2009, she earned her PhD in Biology with a concentration in Immunology from Indiana State University. Her dissertation was titled “Impact of Immuno-Adjuvants on Anti-Lymphoma Vaccine Efficacy.” She completed two postdoctoral trainings in Integrative Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine—Terre Haute and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her postdoctoral work focused on using immunological tools to examine mind-body exercise and its mechanisms. She has been an assistant professor at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College since 2018 and joined EMU in the fall of 2023.
