While the south is decorated with sandy deserts, lush forest, and warm beaches, India is framed in the north by the towering snow-capped Himalayas. It shares its broad boundaries with its neighbors Pakistan, China, and Nepal.
India is without equal with its rich culture and deep history ranging all the way back to the dawn of 3000 BC. Religion is found tightly interwoven with this distinguished past. Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity occupy a section of this history.
- Experience the culture, people, colors and fascinating traditions of India.

- See breathtaking views of the Taj Mahal as the sun sets while the dhobi washes clothes in the river behind this glorious monument built for a loving wife.
- Learn farming techniques from families in Ladakh, beneath the looming Himalayas.
- Learn traditional arts: cooking, painting, dance, music, sand art.
- Float down the most holy river in India, the Ganga, and begin to understand its significance.
- Visit and learn about Mother Teresa’s home and place of work in Kolkatta.

Estimated Cost: on campus tuition, room and board plus $2,500 travel fee (cost may be adjusted due
to changes in currency exchange rates and air fares)

Course Descriptions
CCSSC 201 Cross-Cultural Social Science 3 SH
Students will gain a larger understanding of themselves and of their own culture through
interaction on a daily basis with host country nationals, by living with host families,
and by reflecting on their experiences and thoughts through a daily journal.
CCPSY 301 Cultural Psychology 3 SH
This course will focus on psychological diversity and how our cultural norms (language,
ideals, values, technology) influence behavior. Differences as well as similarities
will be studied across cultures. Students will gain a genuine appreciation for diversity
with an understanding of their own “invisible” cultural values, ideals, and ethnocentricities.
Special focus given to cross-cultural human development.
CCLNG 120 Hindi Language 3 SH
Students will learn the fundamentals of the Hindi language including listening, speaking
and writing skills. Emphasis will be on conversational abilities.
CCHIS 305 Indian History & Culture 3 SH
Explores the long historical and cultural changes of India dating back to the early
Mogul emperors, British rule, Indian independence in 1947, and current governance.
This course will take a look at how history, culture (including art, music, and language),
and religions are intertwined in India.
CCREL 305 Religions of India 3 SH
Students will visit and study the many religions prevalent in India by visiting mosques,
temples, churches, and other religious sites. In order to gain an even better understanding,
interaction and discussion with those practicing different religions will be made
available.

- Typhoid – oral or injectable at least 3 weeks before travel
- Japanese Encephalitis
- Anti-malarial prescription (atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine)
Immunizations and prescriptions may be obtained at EMU Health Services by appointment.
Immunizations may also be obtained from your local health department or primary care
provider.
