Guatemala 2020

Guatemala 2020

Program Description

The primary focus of our seminar is to combine Spanish language study in the CASAS program in Guatemala City followed by travel throughout the country, focusing on conservation, agro-ecology and sustainable development in the Guatemalan context.

The first three weeks will entail home stays while studying at the CASAS language school with weekend excursions to nearby historical cities and areas of interest.  This will be followed by a two week stay at the beautiful Community Cloud Forest Conservation (CCFC) center near Cobán in Alta Verapaz.  Service learning through the CCFC’s conservation education and research programs will focus on educating the local residents in sustainable agro-ecological practices, flora and fauna recognition (particularly local bird life) and the impact of various forestry and farming practices on rainforest conservation.

During our time at the CCFC, we will not only be exposed to the unique Q’eqchi’ Mayan culture and history, but also be trained in scientific data collection and practices alongside local student partners. Students will travel back to their partner’s village for a second homestay and work together for five days collecting data on forest health, local bird communities and agricultural practices within the village community.

The program will conclude with a week in the northern Peten region, examining the role and impact of both tourism and palm oil plantation farming on the local economy and culture.   Issues around natural resource use versus preservation will also be a focus as we explore the renowned Mayan ruins at Tikal and Yaxha and experience both the unique wildlife and biodiversity along with archeological treasures.

Throughout we will have the opportunity to compare our own faith and moral values with that of believers in other cultures, particularly in areas of environmental ethics and the Christian call to stewardship and care for Creation.

All travelers should follow steps to prevent mosquito bites during and after their trip. Travelers should also use condoms during and after their trip to prevent sexual transmission of Zika. This will protect against getting Zika while traveling and stop its spread to others back home.
