Leadership in Family, Organization, and Society
Continuing Studies Seminar in Family and Congregational Systems
October 2025 – May 2026, Synchronous Online
Program Outline
Bowen Family Systems Theory has attracted increasing attention from leaders of faith communities and other organizations. In addition, many have found it a resource for a variety of personal life challenges -parenting, extended family relationships, retirement planning, and more. Systems theory offers a different way to observe and understand human relationships. A common outcome is the discovery that a deeper understanding of one’s own family system propels an increasing effectiveness in other relationship systems, including in one’s profession.
EMS Continuing Studies Program
The Continuing Studies Program offers an in-depth study and application of Bowen Family Systems theory for those already familiar with its core concepts. It is an opportunity for leaders across professions (pastors, chaplains, religious leaders, educators, administrators, and health professionals) to enrich and expand their ability to apply principles of systems thinking to self, family, and organizations. The year is composed of monthly plenary sessions, readings and discussion seminars. Included is a monthly meeting with a consultant who has had a long-term engagement with the theory—a feature common to the process of learning and applying systems thinking to one’s own relationship environment and its particular challenges. Early application is encouraged, due date is September 2. For more information and and the application portal click here. For immediate questions and conversation contact Kenton T. Derstine D.Min.
