About the HCPS Strings Program

After-School Classes

Harrisonburg City Public Schools (HCPS), in partnership with the Eastern Mennonite University Preparatory Music program, offers low cost, after-school violin classes for each Elementary school!

Students in grades 3-5 may sign up for after-school violin class, learning a variety of music including fun fiddle tunes, holiday songs and classical pieces. Violin classes during Fall 2020 will be held online through your child’s school account. Students will receive a music folder, a weekly pre-recorded instructional video, options to send FlipGrid videos of their playing to the violin teacher, a 20-minute synchronous class each Wednesday or Thursday, and a weekly fun music video. This fall, new students will learn singing and motions to prepare them for violin playing once classes are able to be held in-person again.

Students in grades 6-8 are encouraged to sign up for Curricular String Classes, now offered at both middle schools during the elective period.
