Harrisonburg City School Strings Program
Harrisonburg City Schools, in partnership with Eastern Mennonite University’s Preparatory
Music Program, is offering after-school strings classes for students in grades 3-12!
Students in grades 3-5 may study violin and they will be learning a variety of music,
including fun fiddle tunes, holiday songs and classical pieces. Students in grades
6-12 may study violin, viola, or cello, and will learn to play ensemble arrangements
in an orchestra-style setting.
On May 16, 2019, over 200 participating students will come together to present their
end-of-the-year concert at Harrisonburg High School.
Register for 2019-20 classes by September 4, 2019. Space is limited, so register early!
(Registration forms will be available online and at schools in August.) The required orientation meeting for all elementary students will be held on Wednesday, September 11 at 6:30pm at Smithland Elementary’s auditorium.
The program provides instruments for free-lunch students (no additional charge) and
reduced lunch students ($20/year).
Students who do not qualify for free or reduced lunch must provide their own instrument.
Information will be provided at the Orientation meeting. One option is to rent through
Tiller Strings, a local company, for $25 per month. Tiller Strings will be at the Orientation meeting. Parents may also purchase an instrument, but
please wait until your child is sized at the Orientation meeting.
