Hostetter Museum of Natural History

Our outreach program is discontinued for the 2017-18 school year. We hope to re-open the outreach program in the fall of 2018. Our on-site are currently closed for renovations.

The D. Ralph Hostetter Museum of Natural History is home to more than 6,000 artifacts and specimens. Thousands of area school children have visited the site for educational field trips since it opened in 1968. Currently it is closed for renovations.

Our museum outreach program brings many of the same artifacts and hands-on experiences that had been available in the museum to area classrooms. Topics are listed below. Each has been aligned to specific Virginia Science Standards of Learning (SOLs) and designed primarily to introduce students to their natural world and reinforce key curricular concepts.

About the museum

Read more about the museum’s collection, which we look forward to having back on display in an upgraded facility in 2018.

Enjoy an article about a fascinating “find” in the museum during preparations for the renovation: an original typewritten copy of Dr. Hostetter’s dissertation.
