Herbert L. Swartz came to EMU from Canada, where he was a member of the Mennonite Brethren Church. EMU’s academic dean once said that Swartz was “the best practitioner of the Socratic dialogue on the faculty.” His most cogent points in class were made with questions. In addition to his teaching, Swartz was called on for leadership roles on campus, including the revision of general education requirements in the 1980s and again in the 1990s. He came out of retirement to serve as interim undergraduate dean in 1999-2000.
In retirement, Swartz and his wife Margaret went to India, where he was a visiting professor at Evangelical Theological Seminary and the couple toured the area where her family had been missionaries 50 years earlier.
