Stay Healthy Royals!

Thank you for engaging the health expectations that allow you and the EMU Community to be well. We recognize being in isolation or quarantine are not easy or preferred. We plan to encourage your continued academic success and your overall well being.

COVID Resources:

  • Symptoms of COVID-19: Cough, Shortness of breath, Fever over 100 degrees, Chills, Muscle pain, Sore throat, New loss of taste or smell
  • Harrisonburg campus students should call or text 540-421-3406 to report if you are symptomic, have been exposed or have tested positive for COVID-19. Harrisonburg campus employees only need to call to report a positive test or if they have questions regarding COVID.

Resources for students in Quarantine or Isolation

The priority of isolation or quarantine is to separate sick or exposed persons from others who are not sick from Covid.

  • Stay in your assigned space and monitor your health
  • If you are in ISOLATION, remain in your assigned space for 5 full days. On day 6 of ISOLATION test yourself with one of the self tests provided to you. Take a picture of your completed test and email the picture with the date, time and initials written on the side of the covid test to covidhotline@emu.edu. Wait to hear from the covid hotline for next steps.
  • If you are in QUARANTINE, remain in your assigned space for 10 days full days. On day 11 of QUARANTINE test yourself with one of the self tests provided to you. Take a picture of your completed test and email the picture with the date, time and initials written on the side of the covid test to covidhotline@emu.edu. Wait to hear from the covid hotline for next steps.
  • Watch for fever (100.4◦F), cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19. QUARANTINE for unvaccinated individuals will be at least 10 full days.
  • As much as possible, stay away from others, especially people who are at higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19

If you develop or notice ANY new symptoms,  call the COVID Hotline Immediately: 540-421-3406. If you need immediate help or support not related to health needs, call or text 540-908-9646 (Shannon Dycus or Jonathan Swartz will respond)

Health Needs

You will be contacted by one of the members of Health Services to check in on your health and any primary symptoms. Health Services will inform you when you are released from these expectations.

Classes

Being in isolation or quarantine does not always mean that you feel ill. As you can continue engaging in your courses, let your faculty know you are engaging virtually. If you begin to feel ill, after you have called the COVID Hotline, please email Zach Yoder (zachary.yoder@emu.edu) to be in communication with your professors.

Meals

Meals will be delivered twice daily. Lunch - 11:30 - 1pm; Dinner & the next day's breakfast - 5:00-6:30pm. You will be asked about dietary needs as you are housed. If after receiving meals, you have additional dietary allergies or restrictions that help you avoid wasting food (such as vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free, etc.), email Bruce Emmerson (bruce.emmerson@emu.edu).

Sanitation/Health Kits

The kits provided for you at the beginning of your stay are not limited to these items and can be restocked as needed. Email nessa.stoltzfusbarge@emu.edu with requests.

Recycling and Trash

Trash and recycling are available for all on campus units, see below for trash locations for your space.

Mail/Sending Packages, Bookstore and Library Items

Only class-related packages will be collected from the campus post office during quarantine or isolation. If you have reserved books through the library or have books waiting in the mailroom, please email nessa.stoltzfusbarge@emu.edu and someone will be able to pick them up for you.

Wellness (Exercise) Guidelines during Isolation

Spending Time Outdoors During Isolation

EMU recognizes the health benefits of spending time outdoors during isolation for fresh air and sunshine. At the same time, we are asking you to remain alert and mindful of your surroundings to protect others from possible exposure. Here are guidelines to use for leaving your isolation space to be outside:

  • In order to go outside, you must not have any symptoms (no cough, fever, shortness of breath, loss of taste/smell, etc.). If you are COVID positive or have symptoms and are awaiting test results, you should not leave your room unless there is an emergency.
  • You may only go outside if your space has a private option to sit outside (a porch or other separate area) as long as other people cannot randomly pass through.
  • Prior to leaving your room, you should thoroughly wash your hands.
  • Remember to take your room key, or unlock your space.
  • You do NOT have permission to drive or ride away from your isolation space.

Wellness (Exercise) guidelines for Quarantine:

EMU recognizes the health benefits of spending time outdoors during quarantine for fresh air and exercise. At the same time, we are asking you to remain alert and mindful of your surroundings to protect others from possible exposure. Here are guidelines to use for leaving your quarantine space for wellness activities:

  • In order to go outside, you must not have any symptoms (no cough, fever, shortness of breath, loss of taste/smell, etc.). If you are COVID positive or have symptoms and are awaiting test results, you should not leave your room unless there is an emergency.
  • When you go outside of your building, you should remain on or near your quarantine site. You may go for a short walk, but stay within sight of the property.
  • You may only go from your room directly to an outdoor location at the quarantine site. You may not use common areas inside your building (e.g., lobby, lounge, game room, etc.).
  • If you are out of your quarantine space, you must avoid contact with others and wear a mask at all times. You may not meet friends or others for in-person contact. Do not invite anyone to meet you or accept invitations to meet face-to-face.
  • Prior to leaving your room, you should thoroughly wash your hands.
  • When outside your room, you should avoid touching any objects used by others including door handles, elevators, and objects in common spaces. You may wish to take a tissue, cloth or wipes to avoid touching door handles. Remember to take your room key, or unlock your space.
  • You do NOT have permission to drive or ride away from your quarantine space.

**With these guidelines in mind, we encourage you to spend a short amount of time outside each day to take a walk, get some fresh air, or simply experience a change of scenery from your room. When doing so, wear your mask, keep your distance and please keep your safety as well as the safety of others in mind.

Mental Health

Your emotional and mental health are also important to maintain. Uncertainty and loneliness are normal responses. Resources, connection and support are available in many ways.

  • Stay Connected: If you regularly engage in on-campus activities that are being shared virtually, be encouraged to connect with your peers. Campus Worship, Convocation, CAC Activities are great connection places.
  • The Counseling Center can provide consultations, crisis stabilization services during office hours, psychosocial intake assessments, individual counseling, and group counseling. As needed, Counseling Services are able to make referrals to community psychiatry and psychological services for students.
    • The Counseling Center can be reached by email at counselingservices@emu.edu or by phone at 540-432-4317 to refer a student for a consultation or appointment.
