Imagine driving across the country without using a single ounce of fossil fuel. This is the dream of EMU’s Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW). To help make this dream a reality, ESW would like to participate in the Shell EcoMarathon, a competition for high school and college teams around the world to design and build ultra-energy-efficient vehicles.
Engineering students will break into four teams- engine/transmission, steering and mechanical systems, chassis, and body- to work on the car during the spring semester of 2020. The car will compete by passing rigorous inspections and testing fuel economy after a 6.5-mile run, maintaining a speed of at least 15 miles per hour.
ESW and EMU’s engineering students have completed numerous projects related to sustainability and eco-efficiency, including a stationary bicycle that generates electricity and a solar-powered golf cart. Recently a senior engineering student built a windtunnel to add to EMU's engineering lab equipment. EMU’s engineering program is committed to providing students with hands-on skills and promoting stewardship and sustainability, helping the next generation of engineers think about how design and function impact the environment and the world.
