Shortstop Zach Roberts earns early season honors from D3baseball.com, ODAC

D3baseball.com has named Zach Roberts (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) to the national Team of the Week. Eastern Mennonite’s switch-hitting shortstop hit .478 over seven games last week, adding a perfect fielding percentage in 29 total chances.

Roberts was also named the ODAC Player of the Week after batting 11-for-23, including five doubles. The junior had multiple hits in four of the games, and added eight walks for a .625 on-base percentage.

Roberts batted 2-3 with two walks and three RBIs in Friday’s 9-4 win over Penn State-Harrisburg, with each hit giving EMU the lead. Roberts was clutch all week, including Sunday’s dramatic 7-6 win over Penn State-Altoona, where he tied the game with an RBI double in the last inning, and then scored the game-winning run.

Through 10 games, Roberts has a .400 batting average and leads EMU with 12 hits, nine runs, seven RBIs and 11 walks.

Although this is the first time in 2018 that an EMU Royal was named to the Team of the Week, which honors one player at each position, the program was honored twice last year. Outfielders Kyle Mathews and Griffin Stanley were each awarded last year.

The Royals (7-4) play games SundayMonday and Tuesday at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

ODAC Player of the Week

Roberts, one of EMU’s few returners from last year, batted .478 (11-for-23) in the Royals’ 5-2 effort last week. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference recognized Roberts on Feb. 25 as the ODAC Player of the Week.

The Eastern Mennonite junior had multiple hits in four of the games (including five doubles), and added eight walks for a .625 on-base percentage. The shortstop also had a perfect fielding percentage over 29 total chances.
