Kyle Mathews (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) had a great start to his final year and D3baseball.com took notice, naming EMU’s senior to the Team of the Week.
In Saturday’s season-opening doubleheader against Penn State-Altoona, Mathews hit .800 with two walks. He batted 3-for-3 in the opener and added a hit with two walks in the nightcap, being retired just once in seven trips to the plate. Batting out of the No. 5 spot, he scored twice and drove in two more runs. Mathews had two doubles on the day and added a stolen base.
A starting outfielder/firstbaseman since his freshman season, Mathews is a .316 career batter.
