A former White House photographer will present a multimedia exhibit using photography, video and aprons to express the intricate and powerful lives of women throughout Central and South America.
Susan Sterner, director of the MA in new media photography and associate professor of photojournalism at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., will present, “Adelantes Delantales: Women. Aprons. Stories.,” on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 4 – 6 p.m., in the Margaret Martin Gehman Gallery in University Commons.
“As a traveling photographer Sterner recorded scenes of women wearing signature aprons which reflect public and private, commerce and home, strength and beauty,” said Paulette Moore, art galleries director and professor of the practice of media arts and peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University.
Sterner worked for the Associated Press as a staff photographer, covering immigration, child labor and social changes in Haiti. Following a two-year fellowship with the Institute of Current World Affairs, Sterner worked as the White House photographer in charge of documenting former First Lady Laura Bush.
Since 2006, Sterner has coordinated Corcoran’s undergraduate program in photojournalism and is working on a series of short-form documentaries examining community-based health care, according to her biography.
