Eastern Mennonite University field hockey player Emily Augsburger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) has been named one of the best defenders in the state, landing on the All-State First Team. She was an All-State Second Team member last year in an award voted upon by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).
Augsburger is one of only three defenders on the 2016 First Team.
She not only helped Eastern Mennonite’s defense post three shutouts, but was also a versatile weapon on offense, finishing second on the team with seven goals. Including her three assists and 17 points, Augsburger set career highs in all three offensive categories.
The junior scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime win over Randolph-Macon on Oct. 26 and added a defensive save in a game against Bridgewater to be one of just six women in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference to chart both a game-winning goal and a defensive save.
A starter in EMU’s back line all three year, Augsburger is also a two-time All-ODAC First Team honoree. She was named the MVP of the Wilson College Invitational, where the Royals earned a pair of shutout victories.
The Royals finished 7-10 this fall, earning their most wins in five years.
