Sending care and support to UVA and the EMU community

Dear EMU Campus Community,

Our hearts go out to the University of Virginia campus community today.

Last night, a shooting occurred on the UVA campus, taking the lives of three students and injuring others. Recent news has reported the suspect is in custody. We will continue to monitor updates as they unfold.

Safety within the EMU campus remains a priority, inviting us all to care and support each other. EMU Campus Safety can be reached by phone or text at 540-432-4911. Reports about safety incidents should be submitted at emu.edu/safecampus

Resources for care, grief and support are available from EMU Counseling Services and the Office of Faith and Spiritual Life. A compassion table, for placing electric tea lights and writing cards for the UVA campus community is available in the Campus Center Greeting Hall from 2 p.m. through the evening and Tuesday morning. Candles and some cards are provided and you are welcome to bring other cards and similar gestures of care as well.

We pray that God’s grace brings strength, comfort and healing in this time of sorrow for the UVA campus community, especially for the families of the students whose lives were taken. Psalm 147 reminds us: “The Lord heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Warmly,

Susan
