The Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir and the Shenandoah Valley Youth Symphony will present a joint concert 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20 in Lehman Auditorium at Eastern Mennonite University. Both groups are part of EMU’s music department.
The Treble Choir, ages 10-15, will sing "We Will Praise You" by Praetorius, with oboist Michele Kirkdorffer of JMU; "Sans Day Carol", a Christmas song; an arrangement of the folksong "Bye, oh Baby, Bye" featuring dulcimer player Dave Landes; and "The Sow Took the Measles", an American folksong.
The Concert Choir, ages 11-18, will present Bach Duet No. 15, "Laughing and Shouting for Joy"; a newly-composed work "Homeward Bound"; "Kyrie" from Messe Basse by Faure, featuring Sarah Wingard, soloist; "Can You Hear", with soloist Jonathan Blackburn and EMU djembe player Grete Horst; "The Wind", with text by Robert Louis Stevenson and oboist Michele Kirkdorffer; and "This Little Babe", from the "Ceremony of Carols" by Benjamin Britten.
Julia J. White, artistic director and founder, directs the children’s choirs.
The Shenandoah Valley Youth Orchestra is comprised of 30 junior and senior high wind, string and percussion students from Rockingham, Augusta and Shenandoah counties. Under the direction of Maria Lorcas, the group will perform "The Academic Festival Overture" by Brahms and four movements from "Cappricio Espagnol" by Rimsky-Korsakov.
