I am working as a field representative for the California Teachers Association. I do a lot of organizing teachers and other school staff around their demands – for better schools, better working conditions, justice for their students and communities. A lot of the day to day work is assisting members in fixing problems in their employment. But the big picture is organizing to transform the education system: to change the state budget so that we invest more in education, to give educators a bigger voice in how decisions get made in the educational system. We are also big into community organizing and trying to give students and families more of a voice in the school system too. My job involves 1-1 conversations, creating groups and committees, training and leadership development, and working on political campaigns too.
