IV. Announcements

a. Late Night Breakfast – December 10th at 10 pm, we’ll have a sign-up next week. Chambers Singers will be there for some music.

b. Blue Like Jazz – This Friday at 7 pm in Lehman Auditorium. We need four ushers to take tickets and check IDs (this took like 10 seconds!!)

c. T-Shirts – If you come to the Blue Like Jazz wear your t-shirts!

d. Elections – Just a reminder to keep tapping shoulders of interested students. We also talked about changing the meeting time – Thursdays at 8pm or Wednesdays at 9pm.

V. New Business

a. Committee Report – Information Service Planning Committee

i. Starting this fall they are starting a two year process of changing over the user/server system – this is going to be a lot of work. Phone/voice mail system is on one hard drive – this is a bad thing. Looking to use VOIP in the future, because our phone system is full as of now. There was a big discussion about wireless in the residence halls – a positive thing for attracting perspective students (next two years). Looking at an alternative to Blackboard that would be cheaper. Jenzibar is a company just down the road and they are giving us good deals on all these new systems.

b. Committee Report – Safety Committee

i. Making a 4 inch binder more accessible to students and others. Debrief on the buffalo incident (apparently there are “prank committees” at some school – have to approve pranks for safety reasons). MSDS – something about a list of all chemicals on campus. Park Rd. crossings – flashing light which would be on all day, work with the city to make Park Rd. less of a thoroughfare. A need for a student trainer at intramural games.

c. Constitution Approvals

i. Black Student Union –

1. Motion: To approve the constitution with the following changes include Native Americans, edit the amendment process (President’s Cabinet) and other grammatical errors -Tezzia Ndandula

2. Second: Nick Meyer

3. Action II – Approved Unanimously

ii. Alpha Omega Dancers –

1. Motion: To approve the constitution with the following changes - edit the amendment process (President’s Cabinet) and other grammatical errors -Nick

2. Second: Maria Bowman

3. Action III – Approved Unanimously

iii. Peace Fellowship –

1. Motion: Tyler Grove

2. Second: Nathan Kauffman

3. Action IV – Approved Unanimously

VI. Open Floor

a. Our Last meeting will be at 7:45 next week.

b. Starting next year we will be given the Wednesday before Thanksgiving off and the Monday after Easter off – to accomplish this the fall semester will start a day sooner and spring semester will start at 8 am on Monday instead of noon.

c. A student came into the office and had questions about the den staying open late and has that affected Common Grounds? There are too many variables in calculating the losses that CG has suffered to know if it’s because of the late hours in the den. And are we trying to create two kinds of Common Grounds with our renovation of the Den? NO!

VII. Adjournment 8: 50pm

a. Motion: Tezzia Ndandula

ii. Action I: Approved unanimously

IV. Announcements

a. Board Report/Thanks – Thank you for coming to the luncheon!! The Board Meeting report went very well. They were very affirming of us and what we’re doing. Their focus this meeting was the Comprehensive Campaign (raising money for the science center and other funding projects).

V. New Business

a. HTFRLL Taskforce

i. Filled out a questionnaire.

ii. Based on your written rankings, what do you like about the halls that you ranked higher and what do you dislike about the ones you ranked lower? Heating, air conditioning, lack or larger windows, space, sense of community, wear and tear of lounges and kitchens, odor

iii. What is your overall impression of EMU’s resident halls compared to other schools you’ve been to? Hollins University has bigger dorm rooms, Messiah has very nice lounge areas and in general their dorms are newer, Goshen has new dorms (connecting corridors to each dorm, computer labs in the dorm, nice lounges and rooms), Mount Vernon has big screen TV, surround sound, game cabinets in each dorm, Goshen also owns nice houses off-campus.

iv. If you thought about having either new or renovated dorms what improvements would you like to see? Adding carpet to rooms and hallways, rooms across from each other not to the outside of the building, using natural light and/or building green, wide hallways, elevators in each dorm.

v. What is needed in a dorm to help build a sense of community and a sense of interaction? Lounges (comfy couches, board games or games like Catchphrase, more counter and cupboard space to cook, curtains), more sunlight!, it’s good that the Wood’s dorms face each other (the Quad is a good thing), outside benches are nice

vi. What would you consider paying more for in the residence halls? Air conditioning, DVD players in the lounges, carpet, nicer TVs in lounges, wireless, more efficient heating control.

vii. If you had to choose living in a dorm/hall of the same class or mix of upperclassmen and lowerclassmen? Problems connecting with lower classmen, but also nice to meet different people. It’s really nice having sophomore CA’s because their friends come to the hall and the freshmen get to know them. Living with people who are going through the same adjustments and experiences in life is a good thing.

viii. Integrate academics and residence life – living and learning communities, having space for classrooms or offices in a residence hall. Or having themed residence halls? Dorms are the spaces that are homes away from homes – a good space away from learning. Having computer labs or study rooms are good, but not offices and classrooms. Have “jacks in” the room (we all heard Jackson ;-)). Professors are very accessible already; we don’t need them closer necessarily.

ix. Other comments about residence halls – changing the point system for Hillside. More options like Hillside – there is a need for more places like this.

VI. Open Floor

a. Late Night Breakfast – Monday December 10th or the 11th, 10-11 pm. Ideas for carolers or live music?

b. Blue Like Jazz – November 30th.

c. Cross Cultural Committee Meeting – Moral Judgment Survey, Foreign Language competency and if language study on CC could count for your requirements on campus, where you live right before you leave and when you come back is a concern – no housing refunds, debriefing program – there is a group set up, but no one is coming.

VII. Adjournment 9:07 pm

a. Motion: Michael Harnish

i. Second: Steven Stauffer

ii. Action II: Approved unanimously

a. Food Service Report – Pioneer was there to evaluate Bruce, and most opinions were very, very affirming of Bruce. Two options: every student has the same meal plan and the have unlimited visits, or keep same meal plan and have the cafeteria open from7 am- 7 pm. Lindsey and Sarah shared the affirmations and concerns that the senate had. *Reminder to senators to attend the luncheon at noon on Friday with the Board of Trustees. Or come to the big meeting at 8 am.*

b. Academic Integrity Committee – Faculty would like student representation. The group won’t start meeting until next semester, but encouraged senators to consider sitting on that committee.

i. Motion: To approve the constitution with the following changes – change a few grammatical errors, title of organization (Christina and remove Inc.), and general updated-ness - Nick Meyer.

ii. Second: Jackson Maust

iii. Action III: Approved unanimously

b. Absent: Amy Springer, Nathan Kauffman

III. Approval of Minutes

a. Motion: Anny Smucker

i. Second: Kim Hawks

ii. Action I: Approved unanimously

IV. Announcements

a. CAC Dance – This will be occurring this Friday night. Lindsey encouraged the senators to go to this, because we helped sponsor.

b. Housing Survey and HTFRLL – Encouraged senators to fill out this housing survey that will help the housing taskforce to hear and understand student opinions and thoughts. This taskforce would like to sit in on a SGA meeting in order to ask us for suggestions for future buildings and positive comments on present housing conditions.

c. Board of Trustees – Meeting on campus November 9th. Lindsey and Sarah will be presenting to them about what is happening on campus and in the student body. There is also a luncheon in which we will be invited to participate – encouraged senators to clear their lunch hours for this luncheon.

d. SGA spring semester – The secretary will be leaving next semester for cross cultural. Encouraged senators to think about running themselves or tapping other students on the shoulder

V. New Business

a. Commons Council Update – They are looking to move forward on revamping the Den – bar stools, booth seating, comfy couches and a flat screen. Also old trophies or jerseys to put up on the wall to make a more “sporty” atmosphere. This project would take $15, 000 to complete. Lost and Found for the Commons. Signage and crosswalks. Another issue was the possibility of having EMU take over the Den, as opposed to having Pioneer Catering run it.

b. Food Committee – The cafeteria just hired a new chef. Encourage students to fill out the opinion cards, because Bruce looks at each one of them and responds. Bruce is doing a very good job; he’s very passionate about what he does.

c. Library Committee – Discussed putting magazines online. Purchasing better furniture for the library.

d. Sponsoring Sudanese kids – The Executive is proposing that the senate sponsors some children by giving $10 each. The senate was very affirming of this decision.

e. Food Services – Lindsey and Sarah are attending a luncheon with Pioneer Catering. This will be time for negative and positive feedback – opened it up for senators to share. More vegetarian options and more flexible transfer meal hours and options in the Den. Suggesting that the Den uses other options besides styrofoam. “I found a hair in my eggs.” – Sarah Roth

f. Constitution Approvals: Badminton Club – Fix the redundancy found in article VI “Weekly meetings will be held once a week”.

i. Motion: To approve their constitution with the suggestion to change their roman numeral system.

iii. Action III: Approved unanimously

VI. Open Floor

a. The Res Judicata Debate on immigration went well. There was a suggestion to have the format resemble more of a “formal” debate, not a forum. They are planning on doing two more before the semester is over – a student one and faculty/staff one. More time for rebuttals and discussion.

b. Campus security – The new number for campus security is #4911. Magnets will be given to the student body with this new number and other information.

c. Cross Cultural concern – Group leaders didn’t structure debriefing sessions last semester, so SGA didn’t present information that had happened during the semester.

IV. Announcements

a. T-shirts are ordered

b. Weather Vane – A reminder to the senate that we can’t use Weather Vane to push our agenda to the student body.

V. New Business

a. MCC UN Seminar funding request – Larisa Zehr and Emma Stahl-Wert would like to attend this Seminar, and are asking SGA to fund their registration costs - $80 each. They have their transportation and lodging costs covered. Suggestion for SGA to cover half of each student’s registration costs. The students need to make sure to hold a forum when they return to inform the student body.

i. Motion to allocate $40 to each club for each student: Nathan Kauffman

ii. Second: Kate Nussbaum

iii. Action II: Approved unanimously

b. CAC funding request

i. Asking SGA to help sponsor a dance on-campus to get students to stay on-campus over the weekend. The total cost of this dance is $600 – they’re asking SGA for half. Andrew suggested asking BSU or LSA to help sponsor the dance as well. Nick suggested having a costume party so students can feel safe dancing behind a mask, instead of alcohol.

1. Motion to give $200: Andrew Gascho

2. Second: Nick Meyer

3. Action III: Approved unanimously

c. Constitution Approval: Weather Vane

i. Motion to have Weather Vane resubmit their constitution after they make changes to their job descriptions, fix grammatical error: Nathan Kauffman

ii. Lauren Watson

iii. Action IV: Approved unanimously

VI. Open Floor

a. Last year’s SGA retreat was covered by the Lily Grant, and since we don’t have the Lily Grant this year our budget is down to $60 because we paid of our retreat. The senators would like it known that they forgive last year’s and the present Exec for this mistake.

i. Motion to transfer $500 to the SGA budget: Nathan Kauffman

ii. Second: Kim Hawks

iii. Action V: Approved unanimously

b. Karra Black and Tyler Grove attended a Cross Cultural meeting today – talked about the problems with Summer CC. There is an International Education Week coming up.

c. Scott Beckler is willing to play saxophone at the Den. Nathan brought up a concern about whether these last hours are affecting CG. The Den isn’t bringing in enough money to make up for their longer hours…as of now. Discussion: Christmas lights, a Christmas tree, more plants, getting a student to paint a mural, display student art work, make the Den more comfortable.

d. Anny asked about how the planning for the debate in CG is going. Two students dropped out which is frustrating.

ii. Action I: Approved unanimously

IV. Announcements

a. Committees – These committees should be in contact with senators about meeting times and dates. Global Village is committee is not filled as of now. Sarah told senators to tell the executive when they have meetings, so they can report back to the senate.

b. T-shirts – Due to financial reasons, the t-shirts have not been ordered. Yet.

V. New Business

a. Update on Common Grounds – Matt Swartley came to thank us for the support that SGA gives CG. CG strives to create a coffee shop atmosphere. Becoming sustainable is one of their top priorities. Told us about new equipment, new signage, mounted speakers, new furniture.

b. Sophie Beya – She spent the past summer in Southern Sudan (non-profit) and worked as a guidance counseling in a refugee camp. Many children are orphans. One thing these kids are trying to hold onto is their education. They spend one or two years doing hard labor to make money for one year of education, and continue the cycle after that first year. $40 for one student to go to school for the entire year (another $10 for supplies). She is wondering if SGA would be willing to support her in this initiative – publicity and institutional backing. Make this a hall service project; get big groups of people to reach this goal. Numbers are important. Sophie is planning on going back in January in order to personally see that the money goes through the right hands and that supplies are acquired.

c. Constitution Approval – Earthkeepers

i. Motion: Tyler Grove

ii. Second: Jackson Maust

                                                          iii. Action II: Approved unanimously

VI. Open Floor

a. Spirit Week is going very well! Nathan moved to nominate Brent Beachey as most spirited Royal.

b. A senator heard that students are concerned with student life searching through Facebook to find incriminating evidence. Ken would like to set the record straight – if inappropriate pictures are reported, then action will be taken. They aren’t randomly going through Facebook to “find” people out. All students, whether they live on or off campus need to sign the CLC. Distinction between signing something that says - I will not do something - I understand that if I break these rules, consequences will follow. Questions about privacy on Facebook and how much and what kind of pages IS can monitor.

c. Another concern is the trees down in the Quad being cut down recently – what is up with that? We all love trees. And oxygen. And leaves turning colors in the fall.

VII. Adjournment 9:07 pm

a. Motion: Tyler Grove

b. Second: Lauren Watson

IV. Announcements

a. Office Hours Sign Up – sent around sheet for senators to sign up for at least one hour a week. We as an executive don’t want to be sticklers for putting your hours in, but try and make an effort to be there. Mentioned the log notebook – sign in when you are in the office.

b. Chapel on Friday – Decided to meet at 9:45 pm on stage to go over details.

V. Old Business

a. T-shirts – Anny has designs from Sunil Dick. The design for a poster isn’t necessarily what we want on a t-shirt. More discussion about where to put the logo on the shirt – middle or sleeve.

b. Committee Sign Ups – We signed up.

VI. New Business

a. Den Hours – Bruce Emerson was wondering if SGA would be willing to advertise the new hours in the den. He also wondered if we could orchestrate an open mic night next Monday. We could make a poster to hang up in the den. Ken explained how he (and SGA) was instrumental in getting the hours to be extended. Moved into discussion about fixing the aesthetics of the Den – getting booths put in. Or pews? Put different colored light bulbs to create atmosphere. Move the smoking area into the den to get a “smoky bar” atmosphere.

b. First Debate in CG with Res Judicata: Res Judicata wants to facilitate four debates throughout the semester. The first one will be held on Tuesday, October 30 at 9 pm (topic will be immigration). They want to know how much SGA will be involved – publicity or just our name. Make sure to have other clubs involved as the debate topics pertain to their cause.

c. Constitution Approval – Pre-Professional Health Society: Do we have to approve ratifications of club’s constitutions?

                                                               i. Motion: Tyler Grove

                                                             ii. Second: Lauren Watson

VII. Open Floor

a. Smoking action group – Had a meeting and talked about possibly having two smoking areas around campus or just a central location.

VIII. Adjournment 8:52 pm

a. Motion: Tyler Grove

IV. Announcements

a. Retreat Notes and Action Groups – Each action group needs to have a point person. Point persons need to contact everyone in their group to set up meetings and steps for action.

b. Bags in Office – We will hang these in the SGA office, reminded senators to write notes during their office hours.

V. Old Business

a. T-shirts – Logo is not finished yet. Rust Red with white lettering. Wow…that was fast. Nick suggested that we have “Wear your SGA t-shirt” days, so we are more noticeable around campus. Discussion about what to put on the back and front of the t-shirts: small logos on bottom or sleeve of shirt, names on back. Finalize and act on design next week.

VI. New Business

a. Pictures – Group picture after meeting

b. Celebration Funding Request

i. Asking for $300 to purchase a drum set and drumming paraphernalia.

ii. Discussion: Asked about previous budgets and if they went over, quality of drum set purchased, half of the drum set has already been purchased, confusion about asking for additional funds over and above their $200 budget. A question about where the money for this funding request comes from – talked about the SGA budget. Tell future Celebration leaders not purchase items over and above their budget before approaching SGA for funding.

                                                            iii. Motion: Jackson Maust

2. Action II: Approved unanimously

c. Equestrian Club Request

                                                               i. Discussion: Riding is an expensive hobby – during their two year period who will be picking up the tab? SGA funds or member dues? Our job is to help organize them as a group of interested riders, not their riding fees. How will this student club make them available to the EMU campus or benefit the campus?

                                                             ii. Motion: Michael Harnish

d. Blue Like Jazz – Jason Hildebrand is coming to EMU to perform his Blue Like Jazz//Live performance. Campus Ministries is asking SGA to help with funding – nothing more than $1,000.

                                                               i. Discussion: Possibly make it a stipulation for FYS students to be required to attend this event if we approve the funding request? If we want to start bringing in big-name artists for concerts, where does fulfilling this funding request leave us? Lots of concerns about whom else will help to fund this event, and can we afford to give them $1,000. Concern about making this a required event for FYS. Senators think that a lot of students will be interested in attending this event. Denying this funding request and making other clubs pick up the slack seems like a cheep thing for SGA.

b. SGA has been getting lots of complaints about the smoking location outside of Oakwood.

c. Anny talked to Dave King about using noisemakers for games for Homecoming weekend. Possibility of getting rally towels and having students pay for them or increase tuition.

I. Call to Order - 8:07 pm

a. Lindsey asked the senators to introduce themselves.

II. Roll Call/Prayer

a. Present: Lindsey Grosh, Sarah Roth, Anny Smucker, Karra Black, Bess Moser, Maria Bowman, Andrew Gascho, Tyler Grove, Michael Harnish, Kim Hawks, Nathan Kauffman, Jackson Maust, Nick Meyer, Tezzia Ndandula, Kate Nussbaum, Steven Stauffer, Rebecca Stouffer, Lauren Watson, Ken Nafziger, Amy Springer, Terry Jantzi

b. Absent: All present

III. Announcements

a. Went over the binder and the constitution within it. We also covered Robert’s Rules - making motions and the process of voting. Karra covered funding guidelines and the budget for SGA.

b. Fall Retreat – Sunday September 23rd 8:30 am (breakfast and worship) – 7 pm Martin Chapel. Kai will be coming in again (he did last year’s Fall Retreat) to facilitate conversation about dreams and visions for the up-coming year.

c. T-Shirts: New t-shirts? Or the pink t-shirts?

                                                               i. Open discussion: Opposition to the pink t-shirts. Executive decided to come to next meeting with color and design options.

d. Office Hours: Lindsey encouraged the senators to stop by the office during the day if they have free time, so students know we are available to talk to and hear concerns. Decide to walk by the office to show the senators where the spare key is after the meeting.

IV. New Business

a. Celebration Funding Request: Celebration is asking for $300 to purchase a new drum set (operating budget $200). This is a one time big purchase – don’t foresee this happening in future years. We don’t have a written request from Celebration so we can’t formally act on it.

V. Open Floor

a. Sarah told the senators to think about the time commitment they need to fulfill as they serve on University wide committees. We will have a list of committees and their descriptions so senators know what they entail. Ken added that senators are voting members while they serve on these committees. Ken also brought up the new Housing Task Force (every Mondays 11:45-1 pm); one senator will serve on this committee. Another senator job is approving the formation of new clubs – next week we will be addressing the Equestrian Club.

b. Discussed the importance of open floor and how senators should share concerns that they hear from students.

c. Next meeting in UC 209A at 8 pm.

d. Steven had a question about the Tennis Club – student clubs can request monies from SGA. Ken explained the difference between student funding and athletic department funding.

VI. Adjournment

a. Motion: Karra Black

b. Second: Tezzia Ndandula

c. Action I: Approved
