Safety and Security at EMU
EMU offers students a safe and happy campus. Your peace of mind is very important to us. Campus security officers patrol grounds daily on foot and by car and are ready to respond in any emergency. Faculty and staff are trained in crisis communication and response. Harrisonburg City Police offer support and timely notifications of issues near campus.
Emergency Situations and Contacts
Call 911 for any situation that requires IMMEDIATE police, fire, or medical response.
Witnesses and victims of a campus crime or emergency, as well as anyone who is suspicious of people or situations on campus, are urged to contact campus security at 4911 from a campus phone or 540-432-4911 from an off-campus phone.
Residence Hall Directors
In the residence halls, a residence director is on call 24 hours a day to respond to emergencies or incidents which occur on campus. The director can be reached at 540-476-4578.
Each residence hall room is equipped with a campus telephone line (residents provide their own telephones), and a phone is also located at the main entrance of each residence hall. Incidents can also be reported in person at the physical plant office or the student life office in University Commons. (See map.)
Safety Incident Report Form
Witnesses and victims of a campus crime or emergency, as well as anyone who is suspicious of people or situations on campus, are urged to use the security and safety incident report form.
EMU Alert Notifications
Go to emu.edu/alerts for up-to-the minute information on events unfolding at EMU. The EMU Alerts system is only used for urgent campus-wide messages authorized by a campus administrator who is a member of the president’s cabinet.
Annual Campus Safety and Security Report
Download the 2016 annual campus safety and security report to learn more about university policies, how to report sexual misconduct or harassment, fire safety and crime statistics, and more.
Crisis Communication and Preparedness
EMU’s Crisis Management Preparedness Team has joined colleges across the country in assessing crisis communication protocol. In the event that we need to get a message to all of our student body, we will immediately convene our crisis management team to assess the situation, prepare communications for parents and lead the campus during the crisis.
