Class Registration & Advising
An academic adviser will reach out to all incoming students directly (via their EMU email address) to set up an advising appointment and help you select your courses for the fall. These appointments begin in late May and are prioritized by earliest deposit date. First year students will be working directly with their first-year advisor. Transfer students will work with either a faculty advisor in their major of choice, the registrar, or the Assistant Provost for Student Success.
Keep an eye out for an email from an advisor. Not all students will be contacted in May but most students should be registered (or at least contacted) by the end of June. We understand that there are a lot of questions surrounding majors and class schedules and because of this, it takes time to get all students registered. It is often a “back and forth” process where advisors and students will work together to come up with a schedule that meets the needs of the student. This takes time so please be patient as our advisors work through their list of students to contact. While we plan to contact students based on their deposit date, EMU is committed to ensuring that all students enroll in first-semester courses that allow them to graduate in 4 years or less. Students can begin looking at the curriculum outlines and 4-year plans for anticipated majors that are located on the myEMU/Academics website.
Transfer Students
- Prior to registering for classes, it is important to have all final transcripts sent to EMU. If you are taking summer classes, it is also helpful to have a list of courses that you’re currently enrolled in and planning to earn credit for.
- EMU can only accept credits from the institution/organization that awarded the credit. For students that have attended more than one institution, you will need to send an official transcript from each institution.
- If you earned Dual Enrollment credit in high school, you will need to send the college transcript of the institution that awarded the credit. For example, if you went to Harrisonburg High School and you earned Dual Enrollment credit from Blue Ridge Community College, you will need to have the official BRCC transcript sent to EMU.
- If you earned AP or IB credits in high school, you will need to contact the AP and/or IB organization and have them send us your official scores.
First Year Students
- Incoming first year students will be contacted via their EMU email by a first year advisor. First Year advisors will work with their advisees for the entire first year and will teach their first year portfolio class during the fall. This first year portfolio class is required for all first year students and is a way for students to learn more about how EMU works (student support services) and helps prepare students for their four years at EMU and once they enter the workforce. More information about First-Year advisors can be found HERE.
- Prior to registering for classes, first year students that are not earning Dual Enrollment or AP credit for their writing class may need to complete a writing self-assessment/questionnaire. Don't worry! This questionnaire is not a test that you can pass or fail -- it is a tool to help you assess your own needs with writing as you join the EMU learning community! The questionnaire should take around 30 minutes to complete. Here's a helpful Intro Video about this questionnaire. Your first-year academic advisor will be in touch with you about the details of this when they reach out to schedule an advising appointment.
- First year students should have their final transcripts sent to EMU after graduation. First year advisors will work with their advisees to register for classes based on projected DE/AP/IB credits earned. It is very important that students have their official transcripts and test scores sent to EMU as soon as they are ready. Students that fail to send in their final transcripts by July 15th may have their fall schedules adjusted and may be placed into courses that they’ve already earned credit for. A few important notes below:
- If you earned Dual Enrollment credit in high school, you will need to send the college transcript of the institution that awarded the credit. For example, if you went to Harrisonburg High School and you earned Dual Enrollment credit from Blue Ridge Community College, you will need to have the official BRCC transcript sent to EMU. This transcript should be sent after final grades are posted. Credit is only awarded for grades of “C” or above.
- In order to receive college credit for AP classes, students must have taken the AP exam, along with the class. AP scores are awarded differently for each academic course at EMU, so please click HERE to view the equivalency of an AP score for college credit at EMU. Please send official AP scores as soon as you receive them.
