He came to EMU from Central Christian High School, where he was a charter member of the faculty, serving as librarian and history teacher. For most of his time at EMU, he was director of libraries. This included Sadie Hartzler Library, the main library, which was built soon after he arrived on campus. Lehman was called on to use his skills and interest in history, research, archiving and writing. This included teaching history courses at EMU and writing many congregational histories in his home state of Ohio. He served on a variety of committees, including the Historical Committee of the Mennonite Church.

In retirement, Lehman worked for the Virginia Mennonite Conference archives and edited the newsletter for Shenandoah Valley Mennonite Historians. He and Goshen College professor Steve Nolt co-authored Mennonites, Amish and the American Civil War in 2007.
