Trinity Sunday- First Sunday after Pentecost

& archive, Year C.

Lord Jesus Christ,
You call us to come
To be with you,
To hear your voice
To listen deeply to your word.
By your Spirit help me
To see you,
To hear your voice,
To follow you in all of life,
In the way of God’s gracious reality.

Trinity Sunday:  First Sunday after Pentecost

We are led once again to be present at an intimate gathering of Jesus and his close followers in the upper room.  He is introducing them – and us –  to the Holy Spirit, this third member of the Trinity who is now within and among us since Pentecost. Jesus knows that soon he will be leaving this world – but will be returning in the presence of the Spirit.

Because of a sad lack of discernment within the Church, the presence and work of the Holy Spirit tends not to be recognized or appreciated. Rather, there has been great anxiety, and even rejection of this beloved and multi-gifted member of the three-in-one God. To help us find our way into a healthy recognition of the Holy Spirit, to be hospitable to the Spirit’s presence and work within and among us, it is worth listening to what Jesus says.

Jesus is aware that a new era is about to begin – the era of the Spirit’s presence and action within the Church, the body of Christ, and in the world. To help his early followers – and we who follow Jesus today – he offers us some guidance: see also John 14:14-27; 15:26 – 16:11.

Be present with these early followers as they listen to what Jesus says. Listen prayerfully as you read John 16:12-15.

It is the Spirit who is the connector – who takes what Abba God has given to Jesus and then passes it on to us who follow Jesus. The Spirit is our guide, the guide who helps us discern the unfolding truth of God, shown to us in Jesus Christ.  The Spirit listens deeply to the conversations of Abba God and Jesus and tells us about what is to come. In all that the Spirit says and does, Jesus stays at the center, is glorified, not sidelined as if somehow Jesus does not matter. Rather, because of the Spirit’s presence and work in us, we come to know Jesus ever more deeply, follow him more nearly, and love him more dearly.

For your reflection:

As you listen to Jesus explain who the Holy Spirit is and what the Spirit will do, what word or phrase catches your attention? Stay with this word or phrase; meditate on it; allow it to sink more deeply into your mind and your inner being.

Speak to God about what you are discovering, and then listen for God’s guidance and/or response. Be in conversation with God about what is being revealed to you.

Invite the Holy Spirit’s guidance and help in your every-day life and work: the Spirit is our companion, our helper, our guide and counselor; the One who reveals God to us.
