Second Sunday of Advent

& archive, Year B.

 Prayer before reading:

Lord Jesus Christ,
You  call us to come
To be with you.

By your Spirit help me
To wait
To stay with you.

Read slowly. Listen deeply. Indwell the scripture.

Second Sunday of Advent

The Advent pilgrimage leads us into the wilderness;  a desert of waiting.

Far from the noise of every-day; away from rush and drivenness. The wilderness is quiet. Silence rests in this vast, open space.

All other voices are stilled.  Now we can hear another voice.  On the far horizon of this stony desert floor the voice sounds. First distant.  Now closer.

 Turn around, look over here!
Turn away from the world’s ways; turn towards God:
The kingdom of heaven has come near!

(Matthew 3:1,2)

Echoes of another voice: Yahweh speaking :

See, I am sending my messenger
To prepare the way before me.

In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD.
Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

(Malachi 3:1;  Isaiah 40:3)

It is in the wilderness, in this vast space of stillness – away from the daily rush and anxiety – that we are given the gift of seeing the world and its systems for what it is.

And then recognizing our desire for something more, something that will hold us when all else is failing. Something that will draw us into peace, and settle us into wholeness. Something that will lead us home – to our deepest self, to others, and finally to God.

We have been lost in the searching, the fear of not having enough, of not being good enough, the pain of distancing within our own self, and within our relationships near and far, personal and nationally, close up and internationally. This side of Eden there is no rest. We are forever on the move, looking for home.

Here in the desert wilderness a voice sounds. Jahweh is coming; God is near; get ready to meet this One who comes to bring us home.

For your Reflection:

Reflect on the noise and rush in your own life.

What do you notice?

What do you desire?

What is your deeper desire?

As God comes close, what do you desire?  Seek from God?

What might God be asking of you?
