EMU welcomes new Board of Trustees member

The Rev. Gordon Meriwether MA ‘14 (conflict transformation), MDiv ‘15, has joined the Eastern Mennonite University Board of Trustees. His term began in October 2022.

Meriwether serves as director of connectional ministries for the United Methodist Church (UMC) as well as pastor of the Mount Tabor United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg. As a graduate of Eastern Mennonite Seminary and a leader in the United Methodist Church, he serves in a key role on the board of trustees.

The seminary is approved by the UMC University Senate for the training of candidates pursuing ordination as elders and deacons.

“Gordon’s presence on the EMU Board of Trustees helps our seminary maintain strong connections to this important ecclesial partner,” said The Rev. Dr. Sarah Bixler, seminary associate dean. “As an Anabaptist seminary with an ecumenical constituency, it is important to have board members who represent the communities we serve. Gordon’s own training in EMU graduate programs, experience in pastoral leadership and connections to the UMC constituency make him a strong advocate and strategic vision partner for the seminary.”

Meriwether will serve on the seminary subcommittee of the Board of Trustees academic committee.

Before answering the call to ministry in 2012, he had a varied career in the US Navy, business, academia, and politics.

Meriwether has taught undergraduate courses in leadership and business recovery, project management, and several graduate level business courses. He is a certified Project Management Professional and a Fellow at the Sorensen Institute of Political Leadership at the University of Virginia. From 2002-12, his company The Uriah Group provided crisis leadership training to government and commercial organizations.

In addition to his MA in conflict transformation and Master of Divinity degrees from EMU and the seminary, Meriwether holds an MBA from George Washington University and a BA from University of Alabama.
