{"id":5425,"date":"2019-04-18T13:58:35","date_gmt":"2019-04-18T17:58:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/podcast\/?p=5425"},"modified":"2019-04-18T13:58:36","modified_gmt":"2019-04-18T17:58:36","slug":"campus-worship-holy-week-alfombra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/podcast\/2019\/04\/18\/campus-worship-holy-week-alfombra\/","title":{"rendered":"Campus Worship: Holy Week Alfombra"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Gather with the Latino Student Alliance (LSA) for a Holy Week worship service, around the freshly prepared alfombra, to welcome Jesus in this Holy Week for Christians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sawdust_carpet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sawdust carpets<\/a>&nbsp;(Spanish:&nbsp;tapetes de aserr\u00edn), similar to alfombras, are one or more layers of colored&nbsp;sawdust, and sometimes other additional materials, laid on the ground as decoration. Sawdust carpets are traditionally created to greet a religious procession that walks over them. The tradition of decorating streets in this fashion began in Europe and was brought to the Americas by the Spanish. The tradition is still found in Mexico,&nbsp;Central America, parts of&nbsp;South America&nbsp;and parts of the United States, but it is strongest in Mexico and Central America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most traditional use of these carpets is for processions related to\u00a0Holy Week in Mexico\u00a0and Central America (especially in\u00a0Sutiaba, Le\u00f3n, Nicaragua\u00a0and\u00a0Antigua Guatemala) and\u00a0Corpus Christi\u00a0in the United States.
