Maybe<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><i>because I turn 60 next month, I remember phone booths! Are seminaries,<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><i>universities, congregations, denominations doing the equivalent of<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><i>teaching phone booth repairs even though cell phones long ago made them<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #222222\">obsolete?<\/span><\/em><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222\">I&#8217;ll ponder this at Eastern Mennonite Seminary convocation\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aBn\" style=\"color: #222222\"><span class=\"aQJ\"><i>Tuesday<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #222222\">morning, August 26, at\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aBn\" style=\"color: #222222\"><span class=\"aQJ\">11:00<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\">\u00a0in Martin Chapel, seminary building second<\/span><\/em><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><em><span style=\"color: #222222\">floor.<\/span><\/em><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222\"><i>I&#8217;ll ask whether pointers for moving beyond phone booth repairs might be<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #222222\">found in that memorable story of followers of Jesus ruminating on his<\/span><\/em><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222\"><i>death with a stranger. They don&#8217;t realize they&#8217;re discussing with Jesus<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #222222\">the absence of Jesus.<\/span><\/em><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222\"><i>Do we similarly fail to recognize Jesus? If so, are there fresh ways we<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #222222\">can live, theologize, educate, structure our churches to meet Jesus<\/span><\/em><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222\"><i>precisely where we think he&#8217;s absent? As EMU discerns hiring policy for<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #222222\">persons in same-sex relationships, might we even gently help each other<\/span><\/em><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><em><span style=\"color: #222222\">learn to see Jesus across our divided understandings of right and wrong?<\/span><\/em><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222\"><i>If you&#8217;re interested in exploring with us how through meeting Jesus anew<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #222222\">we might do more than repair phone booths, we warmly welcome you.<\/span><\/em><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><em><span style=\"color: #222222\">Blessings &#8211;<\/span><span class=\"il\" style=\"color: #222222\">Michael<\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\">\u00a0A.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"il\" style=\"color: #222222\">King<\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\">, seminary dean<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #262626\">The entire campus community is invited to every chapel service on\u00a0campus.
