{"id":3601,"date":"2012-04-14T14:53:52","date_gmt":"2012-04-14T18:53:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/podcast\/?p=3601"},"modified":"2014-09-12T09:44:45","modified_gmt":"2014-09-12T13:44:45","slug":"session-iv-anabaptist-witness-in-the-empire-i-janna-hunter-bowman-mark-thiessen-nation-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/podcast\/2012\/04\/14\/session-iv-anabaptist-witness-in-the-empire-i-janna-hunter-bowman-mark-thiessen-nation-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Session IV: \u201cAnabaptist Witness in the Empire I\u201d \u2013 Janna Hunter-Bowman, Mark Thiessen Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>#Occupy Empire: Anabaptism in God\u2019s Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sojo.net\/biography\/janna-hunter-bowman\">Janna Hunter-Bowman<\/a> offers a lecture, \u201cEmbodied Discourse as Truth Claims and Behavior Change: A Constructive Alternative to Human Rights,\u201d\u00a0 followed by a response by Mark Thiessen Nation.\u00a0 Janna Hunter-Bowman is pursuing a Ph.D. in peace studies and theology from the University of Notre Dame.\u00a0 She earned an M.A. degree in peace studies from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary while teaching as an adjunct peace studies professor at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goshen.edu\/sowk\/2010\/11\/02\/alumni-feature-%E2%80%93-janna-hunter-bowman-%E2%80%9800\/\">Goshen College, her alma mater<\/a>.\u00a0 As a senior program officer for Justapaz, a Mennonite NGO in Bogota, Colombia, Janna developed and directed a national program monitoring political violence and peacebuilding.\u00a0 She also led and translated for fact-finding missions, authored in-depth investigative reports on the effects fo U.S. plicy and published numerous book chapters and popular journal articles.\u00a0 She served overseas through Mennonite Central Committee.\u00a0 Janna also led policy advocacy efforts for Witness for Peace.\u00a0 Her research interests\u2013including rights talk, embodied ethics, and peacebuilding\u2013are informed by her experience.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/mtn951\">Mark Thiessen Nation<\/a> is professor of\u00a0 theology at Eastern Mennonite Seminary.\u00a0 Prior to coming to EMS, Mark was the director of the London Mennonite Centre and previously led an ecumenical peace and justice organization in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.\u00a0 One of the world-s leading scholars and interpreters of John Howard Yoder, Mark is also completing work on a forthcoming book about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, contesting the common assertion that Bonhoeffer was involved in the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler.\u00a0 Mark holds a Ph.D. from Fuller Theological Seminary.<\/p>\n<p>Conference planners <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/podcast\/2012\/04\/14\/2012\/04\/14\/2012\/04\/13\/2012\/04\/13\/empire-and-the-power-of-withdrawal-isaac-villegas\/www.restorativetheology.blogspot.com\/\">Brian Gumm<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anabaptistmissionalproject.org\/AMP\/AMP_Home.html\">Aaron Kauffman<\/a> describe the conference in this way:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnabaptism at its best has been a series of attempts both to live into God\u2019s in-breaking occupation and to faithfully occupy the empires of this fallen age, signaling the shalom to come. Anabaptists have gone about this work by imaginatively patterning their worship and witness after the New Testament communities of Jesus. Come explore ways in which the Anabaptist tradition can help inspire faithful occupation in today\u2019s world.
