{"id":3599,"date":"2012-04-14T11:51:18","date_gmt":"2012-04-14T15:51:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/podcast\/?p=3599"},"modified":"2014-09-12T09:45:36","modified_gmt":"2014-09-12T13:45:36","slug":"session-ii-race-in-the-empire-nekeisha-alexis-baker-carl-stauffer-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/podcast\/2012\/04\/14\/session-ii-race-in-the-empire-nekeisha-alexis-baker-carl-stauffer-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Session II: \u201cRace in the Empire\u201d \u2013 Nekeisha Alexis-Baker, Carl Stauffer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>#Occupy Empire: Anabaptism in God\u2019s Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesusradicals.com\/category\/iconocast\/\">Nekeisha Alexis-Baker<\/a> offers a lecture, \u201cRace, Racism, and the Nation-State,\u201d\u00a0 followed by a response by Carl Stauffer.\u00a0 A native Trinidadian and long-time New Yorker, Nekeisha Alexis-Baker currently calls Elkhart, Indiana her home.\u00a0 She received her BA with a major in African Studies from New York University, and her MA in Theological Studies with a conceentration in theology and ethics from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary.\u00a0 She now serves AMBS as both graphic designer and chair of the learning community\u2019s anti-racism team.\u00a0 Nekeisha\u2019s interests include ethical treatment of nonhuman animals from a Christian\/womanist perspective, and the intersection of anarchist politics and Christian faith.\u00a0 She is the co-founder of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesusradicals.com\/\">Jesus Radicals<\/a> network and co-organizer of the group\u2019s website and annual gathering.\u00a0 Her forthcoming publications include \u201cKeeping the Devil Down: The Church on the Wire\u201d in <em>Corners in the City of God: Theology and The Wire<\/em> (Wipf and Stock, 2012) and \u201cDoesn\u2019t the Bible say that Humans are More Important than Animals?\u201d in <em>A Faith Embracing All Creatures<\/em> (Wipf and Stock, 2012).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/cds494\">Carl Stauffer<\/a> is assistant professor of development and justice studies at EMU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a>.\u00a0 He is also the Director of the Caux Scholars Program in Caux, Switzerland.\u00a0 For 15 years prior to coming to EMU, Dr. Stauffer worked in leadership for peacebuilding, justice, and development initiatives in 20 countries across Africa, focusing on the application of transitional justice and developmental approaches to conflict prevention and post-violence reconstruction and reconciliation efforts.\u00a0 He has worked with truth commissions, indigenous justice programs, and ex-combatant reintegration processes.\u00a0 Carl also brings North American domestic experience as a pastor working at development projects in disadvantaged urban communities and as executive director of a Victim-Offender Reconciliation Program.\u00a0 Dr. Stauffer holds a Ph.D. from KwaZulu Natal University in South Africa and an MA in Conflict Transformation from Eastern Mennonite University.<\/p>\n<p>Conference planners <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/podcast\/2012\/04\/14\/2012\/04\/13\/2012\/04\/13\/empire-and-the-power-of-withdrawal-isaac-villegas\/www.restorativetheology.blogspot.com\/\">Brian Gumm<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anabaptistmissionalproject.org\/AMP\/AMP_Home.html\">Aaron Kauffman<\/a> describe the conference in this way:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnabaptism at its best has been a series of attempts both to live into God\u2019s in-breaking occupation and to faithfully occupy the empires of this fallen age, signaling the shalom to come. Anabaptists have gone about this work by imaginatively patterning their worship and witness after the New Testament communities of Jesus. Come explore ways in which the Anabaptist tradition can help inspire faithful occupation in today\u2019s world.
