Readers are welcomed to reflect along with\u00a0co-authors Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/jsd636\"><strong>Jayne Docherty<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/cjp-alumni\/mikhala-lantz-simmons\/\"><strong>Mikhala Lantz-\u00a0Simmons<\/strong><\/a>, MA \u201916, on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/resources\/a-genealogy-of-ideas\/A_Genealogy_of_Ideas_-_Journal_1-_May_23_2016.pdf\">A Genealogy of Ideas<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the first issue, titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/resources\/a-genealogy-of-ideas\/A_Genealogy_of_Ideas_-_Journal_1-_May_23_2016.pdf\"><em>What is Old is New Again<\/em><\/a>, the \u201cPeacebuilding\u00a0Wheel of Values\u201d [see below] includes key areas of\u00a0strategic peacebuilding and major fields of practice and career\u00a0focus.<\/p>\n<p><em>Are you a peacebuilder? Are you doing work that contributes to\u00a0the building of peace? Where does your work fit? How does your\u00a0work fit?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Later, a two-page graphic traces the historic origins and\u00a0chronology of peacebuilding activity. It diagrams nearly 40\u00a0years, from the Cold War and apartheid in South Africa to the\u00a0war in Syria, beginning with Adam Curle\u2019s work in Nigeria\u00a0in 1967 (just six years later, Curle, who was Quaker, became\u00a0the chair of the first peace studies program in the world at\u00a0Bradford University). A host of similar peace church-motivated\u00a0movements pre-date the 1992 United Nations Agenda for\u00a0Peace, often seen as a formative influence in the field.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7460\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7460\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2016\/10\/2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7460\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2016\/10\/2-300x255.png\" alt=\"2\" width=\"320\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2016\/10\/2-300x255.png 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2016\/10\/2-768x654.png 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2016\/10\/2-470x400.png 470w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2016\/10\/2.png 920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The \u201cPeacebuilding Wheel of Values\u201d was developed by Professor Barry Hart.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Expanding the narrative leads to other questions: <em>What is the\u00a0lineage of your work? How does the peacebuilding work of civil\u00a0society and UN peacebuilding work influence and cross-fertilize?<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Donors envision inspirational storytelling<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The series will be published at intervals over the next year.\u00a0Volume 2 will focus on models of conflict analysis and basic\u00a0tools. The third volume features stories of restorative justice\u00a0and trauma healing work, while the fourth is on worldviewing.<\/p>\n<p>The series is financed by <strong>James<\/strong> and <strong>Marian Payne<\/strong>, the\u00a0founding donors of CJP. The Paynes provided a generous,\u00a0open-hearted directive: tell the story of peacebuilding in a way\u00a0\u201cthat inspires people to action, so that others can work at peace\u00a0and justice themselves,\u201d says Docherty, academic programs\u00a0director and professor of leadership and public policy at CJP.\u00a0\u201cWe asked ourselves, \u2018How do you write something like that?\u2019\u00a0We wanted something with depth, but not too academic and\u00a0easily accessible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Docherty partnered with then-graduate student Lantz-Simmons,\u00a0who brought to the project skills in video production\u00a0and graphic design and a fluency in creating multi-media environments. \u00a0For example, a podcast of a conversation between\u00a0<strong>Catherine Barnes<\/strong> and <strong>Lisa Schirch<\/strong>, well-known practitioners,\u00a0is embedded in this first issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are more and more aware that this is a multi-textual\u00a0world,\u201d Docherty says. \u201cThere are many more \u2018alive\u2019 things you\u00a0can do if you don\u2019t restrict yourself to a book.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Inviting conversation<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The first issue was produced by Lantz-Simmons as part of her\u00a0practicum, the final piece of her master\u2019s degree in conflict\u00a0transformation. She\u2019ll stay with the project to work on the\u00a0next installments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a way to really contextualize this program,\u201d Lantz-Simmons says. \u201cI\u2019m interested in different mediums of sharing\u00a0information, and it also lined up with my values of democratizing\u00a0information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She has proceeded with the goal of making the e-journals\u00a0full of inspiring information that is presented in an enticing\u00a0and inviting format.<br \/>\n\u201cA lot of things aren\u2019t fun to read because of how they look,\u201d\u00a0Lantz-Simmons says. \u201cIt\u2019s important to make something\u00a0appealing not just textually but also visually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Docherty says that creativity \u201copened up a lot of opportunities.\u201d\u00a0She is hopeful that the project will engage CJP alumni,\u00a0invite current practitioners into a wider conversation, encourage\u00a0others to consider CJP programs, and more generally spark\u00a0readers to consider how they can be engaged in peacemaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone can do this, and we want to make sure people\u00a0hear that,\u201d Docherty says. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be a professional.\u00a0Anyone can be more conflict-competent so they know what to\u00a0do when conflict happens.
