(Photo by Jon Styer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Through its previous research, the International Labor Organization\u00a0(ILO) had determined that women employed by private schools\u00a0and universities in Irbid, a governorate in northern Jordan, earn substantially\u00a0less than their male colleagues. As this conflicts with several core\u00a0ILO principles, the organization recently hired Amman-based consultant\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/cjp-alumni\/raghda-quandour\/\"><strong>Raghda Quandour<\/strong><\/a>, MA \u201903, to help with step two: analyze why this wage\u00a0gap exists, and propose ways to close it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole purpose [of this contract] is to provide the ILO and the\u00a0Jordanian National Commission for Women with solutions,\u201d said Quandour,\u00a0who started the work in mid-2016. \u201cThere are a lot of components that we\u00a0have to study.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As frequently is the case in her consulting work, Quandour places the\u00a0techniques and theories of conflict analysis that she studied at CJP at the\u00a0center of her approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can I handle the problem of pay equity if I don\u2019t [understand it]?\u201d\u00a0she said. \u201cThinking about how these organizations deal with conflict is very<br \/>\nimportant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quandour recalls an organizational development class at CJP, co-taught\u00a0by <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/cjp-alumni\/ruth-hoover-zimmerman\/\"><strong>Ruth Zimmerman<\/strong><\/a>, MA \u201902, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/db252\"><strong>David Brubaker<\/strong><\/a> as one of her primary\u00a0influences. Among Quandour\u2019s other recent consulting jobs have been\u00a0researching the juvenile justice system in the region for the International\u00a0Development Law Organization, as well as an evaluation of educational\u00a0programs for Syrian refugees in Jordan on behalf of RAND and UNICEF.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past several years, Quandour has also felt CJP\u2019s influence\u00a0as she\u2019s begun to lead trainings on peacebuilding and organizational\u00a0development. Her first experience doing so was in 2014, when she assisted\u00a0and translated for Brubaker, who was leading a several-day organizational\u00a0development training for a group of Jordanian NGOs. On the final day of the\u00a0training, Brubaker asked Quandour to lead the training herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid\u2019s presence and moral support during this last session gave me\u00a0much needed confidence, which led to [other opportunities],\u201d she said.<br \/>\nFrom January to May of 2015, working for the NGO Caritas, Quandour designed\u00a0and provided a conflict resolution training for around 1,200 people,\u00a0most of them Syrian refugees.
