Hartzler, who was appointed a faculty member in 1926 and part-time librarian in 1928 and then served as full-time librarian from 1945-61, \u201cwas the lone exception to the male dominance of administrative roles in the school\u2019s early decades,\u201d writes Donald B. Kraybill \u201967 in his centennial saga, <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/emu-centennial-history-now-sale\/\"><em>Eastern Mennonite University: A Century of Countercultural Education<\/em><\/a> (Penn State Univ. Press, 2017). EMU\u2019s Sadie Hartzler Library was officially named for her in 1985. These days, it\u2019s the Strait of Hormuz.
