They can be purchased online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/o\/121691665215\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>through Eventbrite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First performed in 1957, \u201cEndgame\u201d centers on the blind and chair-bound Hamm (played by <strong>Tom King<\/strong>), who is confined to a single room with his servant, Clov (<strong>Jay Zehr, class of 1980<\/strong>). The two men are joined by Hamm\u2019s aging parents, Nagg (<strong>Jason Heller<\/strong>) and Nell (<strong>Theo Panzol<\/strong>), who appear out of a pair of trash cans. The four are seemingly the last living beings on Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt could be anywhere at any time,\u201d said producer and Transports of Joy co-founder <strong>Luis Lojo<\/strong>. \u201cThere\u2019s no mention of how the world ended or how society collapsed, but you get to watch how these people are coping with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA pinnacle of Beckett\u2019s characteristic raw minimalism,\u201d reads a <a href=\"https:\/\/irishrep.org\/production-archive\/endgame\">description<\/a> from the Irish Repertory Theatre, \u201c\u2018Endgame\u2019 is a pure and devastating distillation of the human essence in the face of approaching death.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the bleak setting, Lojo promises laughs. \u201cEndgame\u201d has the same trademark dark humor as Beckett\u2019s better-known play, \u201cWaiting for Godot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s actually a lot of humor in it,\u201d Zehr said. \u201cEven in the worst circumstances, there\u2019s still humanity and there\u2019s still people trying to connect with each other. It is the first play produced by Transports of Joy, which she founded with Lojo. <strong>Pam Johnson<\/strong>, professor emerita of theatre at James Madison University, serves as costume designer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2023, Courtney King and Lojo attended a production of \u201cEndgame\u201d at the Irish Rep in New York. Inspired by the play, which they described as both funny and moving, they began planning their own version. This past June, the team began gathering to read the script aloud and workshop it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After searching for the ideal venue, the couple, who split their time between New York City and Harrisonburg, found a home at EMU\u2019s MainStage Theater. King was Zehr\u2019s theater mentor at JMU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s really been a pleasure and a privilege to work with him in a production after all these years,\u201d Zehr said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The production also marks a return of sorts for Zehr, who attended EMU in the mid-1970s and played two seasons on its basketball team. MainStage Theater occupies part of what was then the college gym.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lojo, a theater professional with more than 40 years of experience, said \u201cEndgame\u201d isn\u2019t often staged, making the chance to see it \u201ca rare opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a producer, I\u2019m aware of how difficult this is to sell to people and say, \u2018Hey, do you want to come see our play about the end of the world?\u2019\u201d Lojo said. \u201cIt\u2019s 100% a labor of love.
