For more information about the annual awards and a full list of past winners, visit\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/alumni\/awards\">emu.edu\/alumni\/awards<\/a><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cynthia \u201cCindy\u201d Lapp \u201986 <\/strong>may have been destined to become a Mennonite pastor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her parents were both Mennonite pastors, as were her grandfathers. Her husband\u2019s father and grandfather were Mennonite pastors, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the family tradition, Lapp didn\u2019t always envision following in their footsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would ask my dad, \u2018How did you know you wanted to do this?\u2019 and he never had a satisfactory answer for me,\u201d she said. \u201cI think my children probably don\u2019t get a satisfactory answer from me either. It\u2019s a mysterious kind of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lapp, pastor of <a href=\"https:\/\/hyattsvillemennonite.org\/\">Hyattsville Mennonite Church<\/a> in suburban Maryland since 2003, is the recipient of EMU\u2019s 2026 Distinguished Service Award. The annual award recognizes alumni who exemplify the university\u2019s emphases on Christian service and peacemaking and have made a significant impact on the lives of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was surprised. I thought they must\u2019ve sent the letter to the wrong person,\u201d she said. \u201cThen I thought, \u2018Oh, <em>distinguished<\/em> means old. It must mean I\u2019ve reached a certain age.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lapp grew up in Oregon after moving from Pennsylvania in the fourth grade. As a child, she dreamed of appearing on <em>Sesame Street<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought that would be a great job because you could play with puppets and spend time with kids and act and sing,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel like pastoring is like that. There are so many different things I get to do that are intriguing to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those roles extend well beyond preaching. Lapp works with other faith leaders to support immigrants through the Congregation Action Network, serves as a community chaplain with the Hyattsville Police Department, and volunteers with Congregations United for Compassion and Empowerment, which operates a day center for people experiencing homelessness or financial hardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August 2017, she joined nearly 100 clergy and faith leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/anabaptistworld.org\/reflections-charlottesville-aug-12\/\">counter-protesting<\/a> the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI appreciate that our congregation is interested in relating to the larger community,\u201d Lapp said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about taking care of one another, which we do, but it\u2019s also about knowing who our neighbors are outside of the church and figuring out what their needs are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of her most significant ministry came through one of the most difficult chapters in Hyattsville Mennonite Church&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The congregation became <a href=\"https:\/\/anabaptistworld.org\/maryland-church-celebrates-30-years-of-lgbtq-inclusion\/\">an early leader<\/a> of LGBTQ+ inclusion in the Mennonite church when it welcomed its first openly gay member in 1986. In 2005, two years after bringing an openly gay delegate to a conference meeting, the church was formally disciplined. For the next decade, Hyattsville representatives could not vote at conference meetings or serve in leadership roles, and Lapp herself was placed under review. In 2015, the Allegheny Mennonite Conference voted 72-70 to reinstate the congregation to full membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe stuck around,\u201d Lapp said. \u201cWe kept engaged with the conference, which was really hard, but it was definitely worth it. And I\u2019m really proud of our congregation for how we navigated that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At EMU, Lapp majored in music, sang with the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/music\/ensembles\/chamber-singers\">Chamber Singers<\/a>, and participated in the Washington Study-Service Year, now the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/washington\/\">EMU Washington Semester<\/a>. She later worked for the program from 1989-93.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was very formational for me,\u201d she said. \u201cI ended up coming back to D.C. and I\u2019ve never left.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After graduating from Wesley Theological Seminary in 1998, Lapp had not intended to become a pastor. But when Hyattsville\u2019s pastor took a sabbatical and asked her to fill in, she discovered her calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was eye-opening for me,\u201d she said. \u201cIt helped me feel that this was something I could do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Lapp and her husband, Eric Stoltzfus, live in Mount Rainier, Maryland. They have three adult children, Cecilia, <strong>Jamie \u201920<\/strong>, and Elijah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Lapp will share her story at EMU TenTalks, held on Saturday, Oct. 10, at <\/em>2<em> p.m. in Martin Chapel during Homecoming 2026.
